Brief description of the typical work day for an intern at this training site Interns start their experience by joining the inpatient services while establishing their outpatient clinics. Inpatient services rotation takes place in the morning twice weekly, and this mandatory rotation lasts for the first quarter. Outpatient clinic rotation lasts for the duration of the internship. Two complete assessment batteries are completion requirements for the internship. The assessment must include psychometric instruments selected in collaboration with their supervisors. Producing two reports meeting professional standards fulfills the assessment requirement. Interns are encouraged to meet the assessment requirements during the first internship quarter. Initially interns shadow experienced clinicians serving within each setting. Gradually, they assume more active roles, gathering relevant clinical information, performing psychological testing when indicated, developing case formulations and treatment plans, and implementing treatment as appropriate. Depending on the setting, these activities may be integrated into the larger functioning of a treatment team. All clinical services provided by interns are overseen by one or more supervisors, who are themselves embedded within each setting. At the discretion of their supervisor(s), interns may be required to present case information to other members of a professional team. A combination of clinical assessment and patient care through individual and group therapy constitute the core of the intern’s experience, and it is expected that a full clinical caseload will be established within two weeks of the intern’s arrival. The sequence of rotations is designed with both patient care and intern’s success as the primary objectives. Interns are expected to keep patient logs and to ensure exposure to diverse types of cases and populations. Interns must present at least one clinical case where they were the primary service provider during didactics as a stipulation for successful completion of the Internship. After the initial week of orientation and mandatory training, interns start their inpatient and outpatient services. During the second week, interns shadow their supervisors during outpatient services and establish their caseloads. Also beginning the second week interns spend two half days per week at the inpatient unit of their choosing, child or adult. In the inpatient units interns are integrated into their treatment teams. Interns selecting the Child & Adolescent track report to the 3rd. Floor of Rainbow Tower, Main Campus. Interns in the Adult track report to the Inpatient Unit at the Veterans Affairs Hospitals on Stokes Blvd. The inpatient rotation lasts for the first quarter, and it is replaced by track-specific elective rotations outlined below. Outpatient clinical services last for the duration of the internship and it constitutes about half of the total clinical service expectation for interns. Attendance to didactic activities is expected and considered protected time for interns. Didactics sessions are attended by advanced learners from various disciplines with a focus on mental health. Attendees include psychiatry interns and fellows, advanced nurse practitioners, counselors and social workers among others. Interns are expected to contribute to the didactic experience and demonstrate leadership through active participation and by presenting relevant content during these sessions. The interdisciplinary environment of our didactic program furthers interns' appreciation of what psychology contributes to patient care in a medical setting. Didactic sessions at UH Behavioral Health Institute are organized along the two specialization tracks, child and adult. All sessions take place weekly at the W.O. Walker building. Adult track didactic sessions are held on Wednesdays from 8:00 until 12:00. Didactic sessions for the child track are held weekly on Thursdays from 14:30 until 16:30. On Friday learners from all programs attend Department Grand Rounds form 8:00 to 9:00, and then join separate lecture series from 9:00 until 12:00. The exception to the separate lecture series occurs early in the academic year while covering neurotypical development across the lifespan. These lectures are clearly demarcated in both the adult and child didactic schedule.

Program Description

University Hospitals Behavioral Health Institute, offers a 2000-hour (minimum), one-year internship in clinical psychology to qualified graduate students from clinical or counseling psychology programs. The primary aim of the University Hospitals psychology internship program is to prepare scholar practitioners for independent clinical practice in academic medical settings caring for children, adolescents, adults, couples and families with complex behavioral health needs. The program is structured to facilitate the integration of didactically acquired knowledge into guided professional practice. Supervisors facilitate the incremental engagement of interns with highly complex cases from assessment and diagnosis to case conceptualization and treatment.

Interns are considered integral members of each rotation’s treatment team. Interdisciplinary teams look to interns to provide assessment, testing, diagnostic recommendations and treatment facilitation across multiple rotations. Serving patients across the lifespan, our internship affords opportunities to develop areas of specialization early in their careers. Applicants are encouraged to identify a preference for either the child or adult tracks in their application.

Founded in 1886, University Hospitals serves the needs of patients through an integrated network of 21 hospitals (including five joint ventures), more than 50 health centers and outpatient facilities, and over 200 physician offices in 16 counties throughout northern Ohio. Additionally, University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital is recognized as one of the nation’s leading children’s hospitals, with top rankings in nine pediatric specialties.
