Brief description of the typical work day for an intern at this training site The intern will carry a small caseload of about 6 long-term individual therapy clients who are committed to forensic supervision and treatment under PC 1026, Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity; PC 1370, Incompetent to Stand Trial; and/or PC 2962/PC 2972, Offenders with Mental Health Disorders. In addition to serving as the team leader for their caseload, the Intern will also lead about 4-5 therapy groups per month, with 8-10 clients per group. The Intern will not only work on their individual therapy notes and group therapy notes, but they will also be responsible for 90-Day and Annual Court Reports on each of their individual clients. The Intern will be a part of a multidisciplinary treatment team, communicating violence risk and criminogenic needs to paraprofessional staff, outside agencies, psychiatrists, medical personnel, occupational therapists, and the greater clinical team. The intern will be trained on violence risk assessment and the communication of violence risk as an expert witness. As the Training Director is frequently called to provide expert testimony, the Intern will have the opportunity to shadow said court experiences. This is a rigorous training site where all staff are being trained daily in the provision of forensic treatment and supervision with a niche population of those afflicted with severe mental illness and substance use disorders. The work week is M-F, 8:30-5PM, though we also offer a flexible work schedule of "9, 80s," whereby the intern works 9-hour days and has every other Friday off.

Program Description

The Conditional Release Program (CONREP) is the California Department of State Hospitals' (DSH) statewide system of community-based treatment and supervision services for judicially committed individuals (PC 1026, Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity; PC 1370, Incompetent to Stand Trial; WIC 6316, Civilly Committed Mentally Disordered Sex Offender; PC 2972, Civilly Committed Offender with a Mental Health Disorder; and PC 2962, Offender with a Mental Health Disorder, Parolee). Each county is required to have a Conditional Release Program, either a private or county provider, which is contracted with DSH to provide outpatient treatment.

Gateways CONREP provides these court-mandated outpatient services to adult men and women in Los Angeles and San Diego counties. Gateways CONREP's Forensic Community Treatment Program (FCTP) is Los Angeles County's CONREP, and the largest CONREP in the state of California. We have approximately 95-115 of the above-mentioned individuals who are gradually re-integrating into the community through a level of care system. Gateways CONREP provides training and ongoing supervision to all employees based on the skills they require to achieve our mission. Resources to achieve this goal include DSH Policies and Procedures, adherence to the California Penal Code, the Gateways Los Angeles CONREP Policy and Procedure manual, and consultation with CONREP Operations in Sacramento, California.

Gateways CONREP utilizes an integrated system of community treatment services; active case management; treatment and rehabilitation to enhance clients’ functioning within society; ongoing clinical assessments to evaluate effectiveness of treatment; rehospitalization and revocation when indicated; and liaison with state hospitals, community agencies, and outpatient programs for continuity of care.

The Mission of Gateways CONREP and our FCTP Program is to protect the public through the reduction, if not prevention, of reoffense by specified forensic patients. Our Mission is accomplished by providing standardized, intensive outpatient mental health treatment, supervision, and violence risk assessment services to this at-risk population as they reintegrate into society.
