Interview process description:

The National Psychology Training Consortium requires that the AAPI Online application service be used by all applicants in order to be considered for our internship training program. Each of our regions is considered a separate application and each site within our regions is listed as a separate experience to which someone can choose to apply. For example, applicants will find the following three application options within AAPI:

  • National Psychology Training Consortium – Central Region
  • National Psychology Training Consortium – Great Lakes Region
  • National Psychology Training Consortium – Cascades Region
  • National Psychology Training Consortium - Cy-Hawk Region

Our individual sites are then listed much like you would see “tracks” or “rotations” listed within other internships. You can apply to as many or as few of these opportunities as you choose within one regional application (i.e. you still only pay for three applications even if you apply to 14 different locations!). However, due to the limitations of the AAPI, only one cover letter can be submitted. In your cover letter for each region, please indicate all the sites you are applying to in separate paragraphs listing the various ways you are a good fit for each of them. Our sites are well accustomed to this practice and will not penalize anyone for mentioning other sites in their cover letter.

The following information is required:

  • Cover letter specifying the sites being applied to and why the intern is a good fit for each
  • APPIC AAPI as designated on the online application
  • Three letters of reference
  • One psychological evaluation report writing sample submitted as supplemental material.

Eligible applications are reviewed and ranked by a combination of NPTC staff and individual site directors. A select group of applicants are invited for interview. Notification of invitation to interview will be made by December 15th.

Interviews will be conducted separately by site in a virtual format. Applicants who are invited to interview will coordinate with each agency to schedule separate interviews based on site and applicant availability. Interviews will be provided on an individual basis and will last 30-60 minute depending on site.

Other Requirements: NPTC-Cy-Hawk Region accepts applicants from non-APA accredited schools, but only those that have had or that have been approved for an APA site visit. Please note that travel to orientation and quarterly in-person didactics is required. Orientation will be two days in July and in-person Didactics will be one full day each quarter. All in-person events are held in Des Moines, IA. Some sites provide travel reimbursement considerations based on the distance between the main office and the didactic location. Many NPTC sites require background checks and drug screens prior to beginning the internship. Eligibility to begin internship, even after match, is contingent upon the intern passing these tests. If a matched intern fails to pass a background check or drug screen, NPTC reserves the right to withdraw the invitation to match with the intern. Program Description

The National Psychology Training Consortium (NPTC) is a collaborative consortium consisting of psychological service centers throughout the United States focused on provision of services in rural health care. NPTC-Cy-Hawk Region is the newest region founded in 2023 and is comprised of sites in central Iowa. NPTC-Cy-Hawk Region is a Provisional APPIC member and has submitted an APA Intent to Apply application. The Administrative Office for NPTC is located in Springfield, Missouri.

NPTC seeks to train prospective psychologists in the integration of the discipline and practice of clinical psychology employing an empirically-informed competency-based practitioner-scholar model. The program provides experiences in clinical learning environments that are responsive to the diverse and changing needs of the human community. NPTC provides psychology interns the opportunity to take substantial responsibility for fulfilling major professional and psychological functions in the context of appropriate supervisory support and professional role modeling. NPTC also partners with various organizations including academic programs, community agencies, private hospitals, and independent practitioners to provide a graded, cumulative, and sequential training environment. The objective of the internship is to prepare entry-level practitioners to function effectively in a variety of mental health settings and to provide services to a variety of populations in rural health care.

NPTC believes that the competent practice of psychology requires an integration of scientific and professional knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Thus, NPTC’s internship training incorporates diverse psychological theories, approaches, and perspectives that are designed to prepare psychology interns for a broad range of professional roles and activities. The training program is also attuned to the continually expanding scope and evolving nature of the field and the likelihood that Clinical Psychologists will engage in multiple roles over the course of their professional careers.

NPTC is committed to promoting and infusing diversity into every facet of the training experience and is dedicated to providing Psychology Interns with opportunities to work with populations in a variety of settings that promote and provide necessary exposure to diverse populations and issues. In addition, NPTC recognizes the importance of multicultural awareness and competence in the provision of professional service and strives to prepare entry level practitioners to meet the needs of a progressively global and dynamic society.
