The Centra Doctoral Psychology Internship program (CDPI) offers a one-year, full time comprehensive training opportunity for doctoral level clinical, counseling, or school psychology students. Opportunities for Post Doctoral Training are also available. CDPI currently offers 2 full-time internship positions, with interns choosing either the Adult or Child/Adolescent Focus. Interns are expected to work 40 hours per week between the hours of 7:30 am and 5 pm, Monday through Friday. No weekend or evening shifts are expected. Interns complete a total of 2000 hours over the course of the year with at least 500 of these hours being spent providing direct clinical services.
CDPI offers two internship training focus areas: Child/Adolescent and Adult. Centra’s
outpatient, inpatient, and residential placement options provide interns with opportunities to
work with children, adolescents and/or adults struggling with a variety of mental health and
medical challenges. The specific focus areas serve to immerse interns in an area of specialization
for treating a specific age group. Interns select either the Child/Adolescent or Adult training focus for the year. Despite specific focus, all interns will have the ability to obtain training and clinical skills with clients across the age range. Interns experience a variety of opportunities across inpatient and outpatient Centra clinics. To ensure a breadth of training in working with individuals across the lifespan, both focus areas include a rotation at the emPATH unit, which serves adults. Additionally, within each Focus, interns complete 3 to 4 rotations, which provide opportunities to work within the following settings: inpatient, psychiatric outpatient, residential and primary care medical offices.
Once Matched with Centra, interns will be asked to identify their preferred focus area and those
placed within the adult focus will be required to identify their 4th rotation of interest. Final
decisions regarding rotation order and placement are at the discretion of the Training Committee
and based on intern strengths and client needs. Decisions regarding rotation assignment calendar
will be at discretion of the Director of Training with input from the Training Committee.
Interns in the Adult focus complete three 3-month rotations in inpatient psychiatry, outpatient
psychiatry, and crisis stabilization. Interns may elect to complete their final three-month rotation
on units/departments specializing in family medicine, neurology, child/adolescent psychiatry
outpatient, child psychiatry inpatient, or other specialty units depending upon current training
opportunities. Required rotations for the adult focus include the following: Adult Psychiatry Inpatient, Adult Psychiatry Outpatient, Crisis Stabilization on the Empath unit. optional rotations may include the following Primary care, Neurology outpatient, and child/adolescent rotations.
Interns in the Child/Adolescent focus complete a 6-month rotation at Centra Autism and
Developmental Clinic and Bridges Residential and a 3-month rotation on the inpatient Krise 6
unit. Interns also complete a 3-month crisis stabilization rotation on the emPATH unit, gaining
valuable experience with risk assessment and hospitalization decisions.
