The University of Texas Mc Govern Medical School’s Louis A Faillace, MD Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences offers a 1 year full time internship to doctoral students in psychology. The purpose of the internship is to provide broad, evidence-based clinical training with children, adolescents, and adults. The internship follows a scientist-practitioner training model, and is designed to prepare interns for careers in a variety of clinical and academic settings. The internship is accredited by APA since 2016.
UTHealth Doctoral Psychology Internship Program provides a generalist internship program at match number 229411. Interns will have experiences with outpatient and inpatient, adult and child clients and will gain research experience, in accordance with our overall program philosophy. Interns should expect to be challenged to grow during the internship year, within the context of a supportive program in which supervisors work directly with interns in an apprenticeship training model.
Program emphases include autism (lifespan), pediatric neuropsychology, trauma, severe mental illness (child and adult), substance abuse, and community psychology. Interns do three 4-month rotations during the year, choice based on availability and intern interests. Other features of the program include a strong didactic component, a large, diverse and highly qualified psychology faculty, opportunities for interdisciplinary work and consultation, inpatient experiences, mutidisciplinary settings, and research time.
Interns have generous benefits and receive 5 days of professional leave as part of their program. Stipends are competitive.
The program is in Houston, Texas, a large, friendly and highly diverse city with a high quality of life and relatively low cost of living. The McGovern Medical School is located in the Texas Medical Center, a very large campus containing multiple institutions of higher education as well a numerous hospitals and research facilities. The Louis A Faillace MD Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences has two primary locations, including its own psychiatric hospital campus. This year we have added a community rotation in which interns will work directly with underserved communities in a multidisciplinary setting, with emphasis on substance use disorders, trauma, and social determinants of health. Interns have the opportunity to work a highly diverse population of clients with a very wide range of mental health problems. We also have a new rotation at the Dan L. Duncan Clinic, in Pediatrics, where interns will provide assessments. The Houston area also contains numerous opportunities for postdoctoral positions.
UTHDPIP emphasizes diversity in training and in the recruitment of both interns and faculty. We strongly encourage persons who are culturally or individually diverse to apply, including persons of diverse racial or ethnic background, those with disabilities and persons who identify as gay or lesbian, transgender or other sexual orientation, gender identity or presentation.
