Interview process description:

Prospective Interns are invited to attend an interview via email. Interviews are typically conducted during the first three weeks of January, and prospective interns will be notified of a date range that they may choose to interview. Interviews involve an overview of the program conducted in group format with the training director, followed by individual interviews with one of the psychologists. Interviewees will also have the opportunity to meet with current interns who can answer any additional questions about their training experience.

GENERAL SITE DESCRIPTION

The Haymount Institute for Psychological Assessment is an outpatient private clinic serving children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families in a community setting. Our client population includes the diverse demographic mix of individuals from Cumberland, Hoke, and surrounding counties in North Carolina.Our services are provided by a culturally and professionally diverse staff of psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical therapists, substance abuse specialists and holistic health providers. Our clinicians represent a range of psychological and treatment perspectives including systemic, cognitive-behavioral, biological, developmental, and psychodynamic. Having this diversity of perspective increases our ability to understand clients in an integrated manner. Services provided include individual and group therapy, psychological assessment, substance abuse counseling, and medication management. The Haymount Institute for Psychological Assessment will provide a minimum of two hours per week of didactic training on various areas of clinical practice to include ethical and legal issues commonly encountered in private practice, psychological assessment, diversity issues, marital and family systems issues, school and community based intervention, and training in various intervention approaches. In addition to the didactic training, ongoing training and supervision will be provided in the administration, scoring, interpreting, report writing, delivery of results, and consultation throughout the year. Interns will also receive a minimum of two hours per week of formal supervision from a licensed doctoral level psychologist affiliated with this agency.The training in psychological assessment is of primary focus, and interns will learn how to provide ongoing consultation to various agencies tasked with a client care. Regardless of the selected track, all interns will have exposure to all aspects of training described above.  It is anticipated that by the end of the internship year, interns will have completed 40-50 integrated psychological reports.

GENERAL TESTING TRACK

The general testing track provides broad spectrum exposure to a variety of mental health conditions, ranging from individuals with Intellectual Disabilities, Learning Disorders, ADHD, Mood Disorders, Psychotic Disorders, Personality Disorders, etc.  Testing cases include disability determination, vocational rehabilitation, evaluations for the development of behavior plans, EAP, fitness for duty, forensic evaluations, and many other referral questions requested by local providers.

ASD TRACK

The Haymount ASD clinic is a more specialized component of the Haymount Institute for Psychological Assessment focusing on the evaluation and treatment of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Although testing opportunities will inadvertently include those listed under the General Testing Track, the primary focus will be on the development of competence in dealing with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders.  Interns interested in this track should have a strong interest in working with individuals with ASD.

Opportunities for interns to provide individual psychotherapy  are very limited though formal didactic training on evidence-based intervention strategies will be provided.  Interns are required to co-facilitate group therapy with a licensed provider.  Due to the close proximity to a military installation, many patients come from a diverse background, and many are Spanish speaking.  Additionally, there are many opportunities to work with rural populations, Native Americans, and other ethnic minorities.  In addition, a large part of the training will include discussion about how to start-up and run a private practice.
