Program Description

The 12-month APA-Accredited internship in a smaller college setting offers a friendly and supportive atmosphere with strong individual attention to intern experience and growth. We prepare professionals with generalist therapeutic skills and multicultural competency. We also strive to develop interns' professionalism and professional identity as they consolidate their graduate learning and their professional style. While the internship is well structured, the size of the staff and college allow for informality, flexibility, and open opportunities in a variety of professional activities. The internship is particularly excellent preparation for interns pursuing a career in college or university counseling centers. The Counseling Center is a well-utilized service providing individual short-term counseling, crisis services, couples and group counseling, and alcohol and other drug counseling. In addition, we have a busy outreach and consultation program providing education and support for students, faculty, and staff. The staff is multi-disciplinary, consisting of 4 licensed psychologists, 1-2 Master's level Counselors one of whom serves as a an alcohol and drug counselor, and 2 doctoral interns. The training model is a developmental, practitioner and mentorship model which prepares students for applied settings and direct clinical service, and encourages life-long study of the scientific and scholarly literature as well as rigor in applying established theory to direct practice. We also favor an apprenticeship approach: that is, on-the-job training with individualized attention, close supervision and mentoring by experienced professionals. The College at Oneonta is a liberal arts college with a pre-professional focus. The 250-acre campus overlooks the scenic Susquehanna River Valley in Central New York, and is located midway between Albany and Binghamton.
