The BGSU Counseling Center Internship prepares interns as strong generalists in the practice of psychology. The training is agency-based with opportunities to gain experience in counseling center functions such as individual, couples, and group counseling/psychotherapy; consultation; community intervention; supervision and training; and crisis intervention. We believe that professionals in training learn best by practicing their skills in an environment that is both supportive and challenging. Internship activities have been developed to complement the training philosophy and developmental needs of advanced doctoral students as they transition to professionals in the field of psychology. As an intern progresses through the year, training and supervision experiences provide more opportunities for independence based upon individual needs and abilities. The BGSU Counseling Center staff is highly invested in training and the professional development of interns. We aspire to maintain an atmosphere of collegiality. We view the internship experience as a mutually growth-enhancing process for all staff. The Counseling Center staff respect cultural, individual, and role differences, talk openly and respectufully about our multicultural differences, and engage in social justice work. Our goal is to create an affirming climate for individuals of all races, ethnicities, national origins, genders, gender identities, sexual orientations, religions, ages, abilities, sizes, socioeconomic statuses, languages, and cultures.
