Program Description

Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital is a pediatric rehabilitation facility that provides services for children and adolescents with a wide range of developmental needs and disabilities. We offer both inpatient and outpatient services in several programs including: the Child Development Program, Brain Injury Rehabilitation Team, Get Up and Go Persistent Pain Service, and Specialized Orthopedic and Developmental Rehab service. Our primary goal is to train future psychologists who are competent in providing clinical services to children and their families. Using a mastery model of training, interns gain experience with diverse health care issues including physical disabilities e.g. neuromuscular disorders (such as spina bifida and muscular dystrophy), neurodevelopmental disorders (such as cerebral palsy, ADHD, and autism), acquired brain injuries, persistent pain, etc. The internship program provides training in broad-based skills of assessment, consultation and treatment that can be readily generalized to other populations, including typically developing children who may be referred to psychology services in school boards or other community agencies.Following the mastery model, we adopt a developmental approach where interns are expected to assume increased responsibility and independence as the year progresses. Through this approach, interns acquire valuable skills such as conducting comprehensive intake interviews, providing therapeutic feedback (including breaking difficult news), conducting standardized assessments as well as learning how to adapt assessments to accommodate varying abilities and needs, formulating differential diagnoses, providing CBT within a group model, as well as individual counselling to clients, and consultation to parents, teachers, and other professionals. We insure that interns have opportunities to work with clients from a range of ages (preschool to older adolescents), diverse cultural backgrounds and a variety of diagnostic groups.
