Other Requirements: Health Professions Trainees (HPTs) are appointed as temporary employees of the Department of Veterans Affairs. As such, HPTs are subject to laws, policies, and guidelines posted for VA staff members including drug testing as well as inoculation against various diseases and illnesses. There are infrequent times in which this guidance can change during a training year which may create new requirements or responsibilities for HPTs. If employment requirements change during the course of a training year, HPTs will be notified of the change and impact as soon as possible and options provided. The VA Training Director for your profession will provide you with the information you need to understand the requirement and reasons for the requirement in timely manner.
Program Description

The mission of the Hampton Veterans Affairs Medical Center Psychology Internship Program is to provide a well-rounded training experience that ensures quality health care for our nation's veterans while also creating a constant source of well-trained and qualified psychologists for future employment. We have 4 fully-funded slots that provide broad, generalist training with a focus on learning and using evidence-based interventions. Over the training year, the interns will have 3, 4-month rotation periods.  The three required rotations are the Outpatient Mental Health Clinic or Behavioral Health Intergratiive Program (BHIP); PTSD Outpatient Clinic (PCT) or the Trauma Recovery Service (TRS); and the Drug Abuse Program (DAP). Interns can then select 3 elective rotations to customize their training year to explore opportunties with varied veteran populations, treatment settings, and treatment modalities. Conducting psychological assessments and supervision of doctoral-level students in psychotherapy are also major components of the program.
