Brief description of the typical work day for an intern at this training site On a given day, interns are likely to have a mix of direct psychotherapy hours, individual and/or group supervision, team case conference and/or seminar, administration/preparation time, and possibly testing activity. Interns generally work between 45-50 hours/week. Over the week, activity breakdown is as follows: Provision of direct clinical services 15 hours/wk (child track) or 18 hours/wk (adult track); Individual supervision 2-3 hours/wk; Group supervision 1.5-5 hours/wk (depending on track); Total Individual and Group Supervision 4-7 hrs/wk; Testing 4-12 cases/year (varies by Track); Professional training activities (didactic seminars, case conferences, journal club) 4-5 hours/wk; Administration/preparation (reading, record keeping, phone calls) 12-15 hours/wk. Specialized additional training opportunities are available for interns in the adult or child tracks (e.g. up to 4 hours/week; activities include provision of supervision, observations in emergency services or inpatient units; community outreach activities).

Interviews will be fully virtual for the 2022-23 recruitment class. On interview dates, Candidates will attend an overview session and Q & A with the Training Director and the Adult or Child Clinic Director. They will also attend a virtual facilities tour, meet with current interns, and interview with multiple supervising faculty in pairs. They will also attend a case conference/team meeting and have the opportunity to meet all supervising faculty.

Top candidates are selected for interviews following a thorough process of application reviews. Interviewees indicate preference of dates among at least two options offered. Candidates attend an interview date with other candidates. The interview day generally begins at 8:00am and lasts until 2pm.  We request interviewees’ permission to screenshot their image on the interview day, to aid raters' memory of the candidates through the recruitment process. Following interview days, faculty interviewers submit independent ratings of candidates. Our rank-ordered list for the Match is based on the data gathered during the interview as well as the overall fit between the applicant and the training program.

Tentative Interview dates will be on Mondays (Adult track) and Wednesdays (Child track) in December 2021 and early to mid January 2022.

Program Description

Candidates for this full time internship program may apply to one of our two training tracks, each with training based in training-centered clinics within the University of Michigan's Mary A. Rackham Institute.  Our Child Track interns train and work in our child/family clinic (the University Center for the Child and the Family) and our Adult Track interns train and work within our adult clinic (the University Psychological Clinic).  Both units offer strong supervision and seminar programs. Both programs are integrative & evidence-based. Both work within a hybrid office model, with 2-3 days/week onsite and 2-3 days/week working virtually. The child program works with a wide group of clients in assessment, parent and family treatments, individual interventions, and psychoeducational groups and community consultation; the adult program works with individuals and couples using a range of therapeutic approaches, including CBT, ACT, DBT, CBASP, brief dynamic, systems, & other models. Both programs also provide experience in test administration, and opportunities exist for some neuropsychological testing training as well. The Adult track offers training in group interventions. In addition to core rotations in outpatient psychotherapy and testing, specialized training opportunities are also available in community outreach, school-based work (Child track), group or couples therapy, emergency room or inpatient shadowing, telehealth, or supervision of junior trainees. Specialized rotations may be minor rotations for a few months offering exposure to a different service up to 4 hours/week, or may be a major focus of training and integrated throughout the year. Staff are primarily psychologists, with social workers and consulting psychiatrists. Training occurs in an interdisciplinary context that includes psychology practicum and social work students, MSW fellows, psychology postdoctoral fellows, and psychiatry residents.

Child track interns have notable training experiences in psychological testing including ADHD, LD and ASD testing whereas testing is a minor experience for Adult track interns.  Autism-Spectrum assessment and interventions may also be a major training experience for Child and Lifespan track interns. Family therapy is an exposure experience for Child and Lifespan interns.  Providing supervision and telehealth are optional experiences for both tracks.

Couples therapy is an optional experience for all interns. Group therapy is an optional training experience for Adult interns.
