NOTE: For the 2021-2022 Training Year, all interviews for the Charleston Consortium will be conducted VIRTUALLY. No on-campus interviews will be conducted. 

   Beginning on November 1st, our Psychology Education Committee members will review all application materials. Invitations to interview are issued on a "rolling" basis (i.e., not all invitations issued at the same time), usually in late November/early December. It is likely that some individuals -- even those who submitted their applications at the same -- will receive interview invitations at different times. This is not a reflection of the quality of any individual's application; it is simply a consequence of the rate at which applicant materials can be reviewed. 

    Applicants selected for interviews will be notified VIA E-MAIL. The invitation will include available dates for interview, as well as the names of faculty members who may be interested in interviewing you. You will be asked to respond to the invitation by selecting a date and by providing the names of the faculty members with whom you are most interested in meeting (which may include faculty members who were not mentioned in your invitation). There are a limited number of interview slots available on each given date, and these are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, so it is in the applicant's best interest to respond to the invitation promptly with a preferred interview date.

   We will make every effort to arrange interviews with the faculty members you are most interested in meeting with on the day of your interview. If we are unable to arrange an interview with your desired faculty member(s), we will try to arrange interviews with faculty members who have similar interests. If, after your interviews, you would still like to speak with a particular faculty member, let us know and we will do our best to facilitate a conversation

   Your interview day will begin with an orientation teleconference, which will provide an overview of the program, its tracks, and other relevant "big picture" issues. This is followed by three 45 - 50 minute individual interviews with three separate faculty members. You will also have the opportunity to videoconference with current interns. A group exit interview with one of our Co-Directors will conclude your day. This meeting is the best time to ask any remaining questions you have about our internship program, and to mention any additional faculty members you may wish to speak with. We will make every effort to schedule our interview days so that applicants from all time zones can participate without undue burdens on their sleep-wake cycle. Therefore, some interview days are likely to start later than others. 

We anticipate that we will be providing most of our interviews utilizing the Zoom teleconferencing platform. We will do our best to accommodate the technology needs of all interviewees. 

We will offer at least 3 "west coast" interview days, on which orientation will take place at 11 am EST/8 am PST, in order to try to accommodate applicants from the western states.

Other Requirements: All matched interns must complete employment eligibility screens for either MUSC or the Ralph H. Johnson VAMC. These screening procedures include background checks and pre-employment drug screens. Background checks are aimed at identifying serious past felonies. Applicants are advised that neither recreational nor medical use of marijuana is currently legal in South Carolina, and the VA has advised its national workforce that marijuana use is not allowable. Positive tests for marijuana (as well as other illicit drugs) may be grounds for denial of employment at MUSC and the Ralph H Johnson VAMC.
Program Description

The Charleston Consortium is a collaborative effort of the MUSC and the Psychology Service of the DVAMC. The training program provides a one year, full-time training experience for Ph.D. students in APA accredited clinical, counseling, and school psychology programs. It is fully accredited by APA. Ours is a scientist-practitioner model, though clinical scientist trainees are also comfortable in our program. We believe that psychology interns should receive training that integrates research and clinical practice. We expect interns to examine the efficacy of what they do with clients and to review the research literature for guidance about which treatment strategies are best suited to particular problems. Our objective is to produce interns who approach their clinical work with an investigatory, inquisitive attitude and who are competent to conduct clinical investigation. A second important philosophical foundation for the Program is a belief that it is important to provide a balance of broad-based, "generalist" training and some measure of "in-depth" training for interns who wish to specialize. We designed our Program so that interns wishing to specialize can do so. However, interns receiving specialty training also participate in more general training experiences. A third philosophical belief providing a foundation for the Program is that it is important for interns to work with a variety of client populations, including those frequently underserved by mental health professionals. A fourth important philosophical belief is that interns must be provided with training experiences that expose them to "cutting edge" aspects of scientist-practitioner work in the 21st century. A final philosophical belief is that good training is best accomplished in an atmosphere of mutual respect between faculty and interns. We believe that the best learning environment is one in which one learns by doing and learning is fun. We attempt to create such a learning environment by treating interns as junior colleagues.

Even prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, a significant number of our rotations provided training in telehealth service delivery. Since the onset of the pandemic, all of our rotations have incorported at least an element of telehealth service provision. It is likely that, even after pandemic conditions abate, telehealth services will be maintained for at least some aspects of many rotations. T
