NOPIP is an APA accredited consortium comprised of the Laureate Institute for Brain Research, Indian Health Care Resource Center, and Cherokee Nation Behavioral Health. The primary mission of NOPIP is to provide the highest quality of clinical training utilizing a diverse range of theoretical models and techniques, recognizing the importance of cultural and individual differences. The training provided is unique to each site and highly individualzed for each intern. NOPIP considers the integration of research and practical experience essential to the development of professional competency. Recognizing the unique needs of each individual trainee, NOPIP is guided by both the Scientist-Practitioner and Scholar-Practitioner philosophies. NOPIP places a strong emphasis on applying evidence-based practices, the application of science in practice, research-based programming, as well as clinically-informed research. We also view training in working with diverse and underserved populations to be an integral part of internship training. Our goal is to provide training experiences that support interns' development as future leaders in their respective fields.
Six positions are available within the consortium, including: Position 1 & 2: at Cherokee Nation Outpatient Health Clinic at Cherokee Nation Behavioral Health (CNBH); 3 & 4 at Indian Health Care Resource Center (IHCRC); and 5 & 6 at the Laureate Institute for Brain Research (LIBR). All primary sites include 36 hours of onsite training in clinical settings plus 2 hours of didactic seminar training and 2 hours of group supervision weekly. Each site provides opportunities for involvement in research and/or program development.
Interns remain at their selected sites (e.g., CNBH, LIBR, or IHCRC) for the full year but their experience within those sites may involve different clinical rotations. Individual supervision is provided at each site. However, all interns attend weekly training seminars and group supervision together as a cohort. The variety of potential placement sites and strong emphasis on training and professional development provide a rich experience for NOPIP interns. The program's training model is based on the idea that interns differ in both prior experience and professional goals. Both required activities and individualized training are utilized in order to achieve profession-wide competencies and to allow for the pursuit of specific goals. As a graduate of NOPIP, each intern is expected to have developed at least an intermediate level of skill in profession-wide competencies.
Internship experiences at the Indian Health Care Resource Center focus on behavioral health services in an interdisciplinary medical facility while emphasizing cultural competency in providing service in American Indian communities, and include experiences in psychotherapy, psychological assessment, integrated health services, community outreach, and program development. At Cherokee Nation Behavioral Health, interns gain experience in integrative services and receive training in implementing brief consultation and intervention in various medical clinics, including individual and group therapy, psychological assessment, pediatric/behavioral health integration, and consultation and program development. Laureate Institute for Brain Research works closely with Laureate Psychiatric Clinic and Hospital to provide individualized experiences within the private hospital setting and the clinical research setting, offering experiences in eating disorders, substance use disorders, and mood/anxiety disorders within inpatient, intensive outpatient, and outpatient clinical trial settings.
