Brief description of the typical work day for an intern at this training site Interns spend 3.5 of the 5 days per week on clinical rotations. Activities include conducting psychological/neuropsychological assessment, providing individual/group/psychoeducational interventions, and consulting to medical and allied health professionals depending on the particular rotation selected. Administrative duties include writing reports of assessment results, psychotherapy notes, etc. in the computerized medical record. Two hours each week are spent in scheduled face-to-face supervision although additional curbside supervision is the norm. Two core therapy cases (outside the clinical rotation) are also seen during the week in addition to one hour of supervision with the core case therapy supervisor. Wednesdays are devoted to didactics, when interns attend various seminars (e.g., Assessment Seminar, Psychotherapy Seminar, Diversity Seminar, etc.).

Interview process description:

At this time, all selection procedures will remain virtual for the 2022-2023 internship class year (changes to this policy will be enacted and presented here no later than October 1, 2021).  Applicants are invited to interview by email.  Offers will extended to participate in a virtual open house, followed by a virtual interview. Virtual Open House will be held on two Fridays in January (1/14/22 & 1/21/22). Intern applicants meet (virtually) with faculty and interns for individual interviews and they also get an overview of the program as well as brief presentations on each clinical rotation. There is a (virtual) meeting with the interns to ask questions.  Please note that the virtual open house is not required nor is it part of the interview process and is only for applicants we have invited to interview.  The interview day typically lasts from 8:00am to 3:00pm, with the open house presentations encompassing the morning, and individual interviews in the afternoon.  For applicants who cannot schedule interviews on those assigned days, we will offer alternatives, but interviews must be completed during the two weeks in which our open house meetings will occur.

Program Description

The Tampa VAMC offers an APA-accredited internship for students desiring broad-based experiences in assessment, therapeutic intervention, and consultation in a general medical setting. We are a scientist-practitioner program and emphasize the importance of research-informed clinical work and clinically-informed research. We have a generalist clinical psychology internship with three tracks: 1.) General Track, 2.) Neuropsychology Track, and 3.) Trauma Track. During the training year, students complete four clinical rotations that meet the requirements for their particular track/program. In addition to the clinical rotations, interns are expected to maintain a caseload of two therapy cases, and attend three year-long training seminars (Assessment, Psychotherapy, and Diversity Seminars). A Neuropsychology Seminar is also required for the Neuropsychology Track Interns (optional for other interns). Additional didactic opportunities are available through the hospital or across the street at the University of South Florida, College of Medicine and Dept. of Psychology. Please see our website for a complete listing of available rotations. Applicants interested in the Neuropsychology program may rank only that program. Other applicants may rank either the General track, the Trauma track, or both.  Cover letter should indicate program (track) preference. Neuropsychology- and Trauma-focused rotations are available only to the respective track interns for the first half of the internship year.
