Interview process description:

PLEASE NOTE: Applicants interested in both tracks (i.e., Adult, Child/Adolescent) must choose and apply to only one track.

Interviews are tentatively scheduled for January 11, 12, 18, 19. On-site interviews are an option for those able to attend in-person. The rationale for this option is that on-site interviews offers interns the chance to experience the internship setting, surrounding area, and program staff. In the past, this opportunity has proved invaluable for interns and helps inform their decision about the "fit" of the site. In the case that applicants are not able to attend on-site interview, virtual interviews will be offered (via Zoom). Middlesex Health assures an equitable experience for all applicants, regardless of interview format, and will protect against any bias that might arise from applicants interviewed with different formats.

Telephone interviews will not be considered. Applicants will be notified about their interview status via email by 12/08/2023.

Individual interviews will be conducted with one or more members of the psychology faculty team. Interviews last approximately 45 minutes, and are comprised of a Q&A format. Applicants are provided time to ask questions about the internship program. Applicants are also provided opportunity to meet with current interns to discuss their experiences. Applicants able to attend on-site interviews will receive a brief tour of the facility and Middlesex Hospital campus.

Other Requirements: Interns must complete drug screening* and a criminal background check** prior to the start of their training. Additional health form records are also required to confirm prior vaccinations, and negative results for both tuberculosis*** and COVID-19. These procedures are arranged by interns, who also incur any relevant costs. Per hospital policies, disqualifiers for drug screening and background check are detailed below. *Middlesex Health follows Connecticut state regulations regarding pre-employment drug screenings. If an individual tests “positive” for any substance, a Medical Review Officer (MRO) conducts a verification interview to determine if there is a legitimate medical use for said substance. If legitimate medical use is determined (i.e., prescribed drug), the drug screen is deemed negative. If there is no legitimate medical use, the drug screen is deemed positive. Regarding medical marijuana, this substance is treated like a medication, assuming it can be verified. Please note, the MRO may raise issues about potential impairment and fitness for duty, depending on the applicant’s job responsibilities. **Any records discovered during a background check will be reported to the training program director. As a general rule, any arrest for drugs or violence are automatic disqualifiers, as hospital patients are considered “vulnerable populations.” Records such as driving while intoxicated (DWI) and others that might have an explanation (e.g., petty larceny) can be given consideration; decisions about acceptance/rejection will be based on the time proximity to hire date and discussion with applicant about the specific circumstances. ***Acceptable screenings include a QFT blood test OR two negative PPD tests, within the past 12 months.
Program Description

The internship is an APA-accredited, full-time training and supervised experience which consists of 2,000 hours during a 12-month training year. The program begins at the end of August/beginning of September and extends for through August of the following year. Two interns will be selected for the 2022-2023 training year. One intern will work with children/adolescents at the Family Advocacy Program outpatient clinic, and one intern will work with adults at the outpatient Center for Behavioral Health. Training experiences include individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, family therapy, intake evaluations, and psychological testing. The overall goal of the program is to prepare advanced graduate students for generalist practice in a multitude of mental health settings. The internship program serves clients with varied ethnic backgrounds, socioeconomic status, and presenting problems. Conditions treated include major depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, PTSD, and anxiety disorders. Several clients have comorbid substance abuse issues. Interns function as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team of psychologists, psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and social workers.
