Program Description

The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) Psychology Internship Program is designed to prepare psychologists-in-training for impactful careers across clinical, academic, and leadership settings. Our program is grounded in a practitioner-scholar framework and set within a vibrant academic medical center that emphasizes interprofessional collaboration and evidence-based care.             We feature tracks in Adult or Child and Adolescent Psychology. Within the adult track, subspecialty opportunities include working with individuals with serious mental illness (SPI), health psychology, Deaf and Hard of Hearing populations, Spanish-speaking patients and older adults. Set within the home of the biopsychosocial model, this predominantly clinical internship provides training in a variety of interdisciplinary settings with individuals with a wide range of presenting concerns. Our program offers multiple integrated care experiences where interns provide assessment, intervention, consultation, and supervision/teaching. We provide opportunities for trainees to work across the continuum of care, with rotations in inpatient and outpatient environments.
Beyond direct clinical work, interns engage in a mentored program development or evaluation project that highlights the wide-reaching roles psychologists can play in systems-level change, administration, and academic leadership. This project allows interns to broaden their understanding of psychological practice and to contribute meaningfully to the institution at a systems level. Interns have an opportunity to present their work to their interdisciplinary faculty and colleagues within the Department of Psychiatry at the end of the academic year.
Our program places a strong emphasis on training, supervision, and professional development. A robust didactic curriculum supports interns in developing their clinical identity and preparing for postdoctoral and early-career transitions. We are equally committed to fostering self-reflection, growth, and helping interns find their voice in the process. As a program, we continuously examine our own blind spots and actively work to address systemic and historical barriers to mental health care. Our training is guided by the ethical principles of psychology and a commitment to justice-informed practice. We are proud of the breadth, depth, and integrity of the training we offer, and we look forward to supporting the next generation of psychologists as they launch their careers.
