Site Name: Kansas State University
Department: Lafene Counseling and Psychological Services
Applicants are interviewed individually during a one-hour phone or video conference call. We choose not to require in-person interviews to respect limitations on time and finances that applicants may have. An optional open house is scheduled for early January (typically the second or third Friday of January) so applicants can visit Counseling Services and meet our staff and current interns if interested and able. Applicants are encouraged to contact staff or interns for answers to any questions about our great site!
Our internship program aims to develop and train competent generalists in health service psychology, prepared for post-doctoral practice. We strive to facilitate the development of ethical, professional psychologists who are knowledgeable and respectful of human diversity, and who will contribute to the field of psychology and their communities. We emphasize the practice of evidence-based clinical and counseling psychology while providing supervision through a developmental lens. We maintain a social justice stance, and accordingly, we offer an array of seminars and supervised training experiences, all of which emphasize “learning by doing,” combined with the “open door” culture among our interdisciplinary staff. Training and clinical work occur in a university counseling center that serves a campus community of 16,000+ students. Our interns gain extensive experience working with a variety of mental health issues in addition to typical developmental concerns intrinsic in college student populations. Training activities include individual and group psychotherapy; urgent/crisis counseling; psychological/clinical assessment; supervision (receiving and providing); outreach with the campus community; plus consultation with students, staff, faculty, and parents. Additionally, interns receive training through their participation in multiple training/seminars throughout the year. We include a heavy emphasis on equity for all and provide interns opportunities to engage in social justice activities.
(training opportunities continued)
We offer interns the opportunity to participate in clinical rotations with the College of Veterinary Medicine and the University Health Clinic
