The Psychology Service of the Miami VA Healthcare System (Miami VAHS), located in Miami Florida, offers post-doctoral training in health service psychology to nine residents each year. The positions are one year long and each position has a specific area of emphasis:
1. PTSD and Related Concerns - 1 position
2. Gero-Neuropsychology - 1 position
3. Mental Health Recovery and Rehabilitation - 2 positions
4. Forensics/Veteran's Justice Outreach - 1 position
5. Health Psychology
a) Traditional Health - 1 position
b) Liver Diseases and HIV - 1 position
c) Integrated Health/PACT - 2 positions
d) Rehabilitation Psychology - 1 position
Residents select from a wide range of rotations typically in their area of emphasis. Additionally, they provide both psychotherapy and psychological assessment services in the general mental health clinic for a portion of their time year round. They are also involved in the supervision of interns, facilitate and manage intern training activities (e.g., case conferences), and participate in the internship training committee. They also receive training in program evaluation, research, and similar scholarly activities.
Choices among clinical experiences include Primary Care - Mental Health Integration; Palliative Care and Hospice; Pain Management; Disease Management (obesity, liver disease, organ transplants, cardiology, diabetes and infectious diseases); Consultation & Liaison; Neuropsychology; Geriatric Neuropsychology (outpatient and Community Living Center), Residential Psychiatric and Substance Use Rehabilitation & Recovery Programs, Psychosocial Recovery and Rehabilitation Center, Rehabilitation Psychology, and Forensic/Veterans Justice Outreach and the PTSD Division (PTSD emphasis only).

The goal of the postdoctoral program is to prepare scientifically-minded, doctoral-level psychologists to function effectively and autonomously in priority areas of health care for veterans and military patients. Applicants must have completed an APA, CPA, or PCSAS-accredited Ph.D. or Psy.D. program, including an APA- or CPA-accredited internship, preferably within a health care setting. Previous clinical and research experience in emphasis area is highly desirable. The program places strong emphasis on clinical activity. Residents are expected to achieve competencies based on the practitioner-scholar model in professionalism, assessment, evaluation and conceptualization skills, intervention and consultation skills, scientific thinking and research skills, education, teaching and supervision skills, diversity and muticulturalism, and administrative and systemic skills.
