Site Name: The University of Texas at Austin
Department: Counseling and Mental Health Center
Please see the "Application and Selection Process" section of our web site for a comprehensive description. Briefly: Zoom or phone interviews are conducted during the middle part of December and/or early January. We do not conduct on-site interviews but welcome optional site visits. Interviews consist of time with an interview panel and separate time with the Training Director. Applicants are encouraged to talk to current interns, and are welcomed to contact us at any time if they have questions.
Our internship program is based within a large university counseling and mental health center that includes psychologists, psychiatrists, clinical social workers, licensed professional counselors, and other professionals in the fields of health and mental health. Interns receive training and experience in individual counseling, group interventions, crisis intervention, and supervision of practicum students. There are opportunities to be involved in prevention/outreach activities. Interns are exposed to a wide range of presenting concerns within a diverse campus of more than 52,000 students. Our center has a very active group interventions program, with 35+ interpersonal process, structured, and population- and presenting issue-specific groups offered each semester. Interns participate in a comprehensive orientation and training program during the first four weeks of the internship, and attend a variety of seminars throughout the year. The CMHC staff is committed to addressing the needs of a diverse student population, and our internship program strives to incorporate and emphasize multicultural issues as a fundamental part of the training experience in preparing interns to provide informed, ethical and competent mental health care. In addition, our program incorporates a 'Use of Self' training model, as we encourage interns to explore and understand the qualities and dynamics that each intern brings to interpersonal encounters and how these facilitate or hinder effective interactions and interventions. For more information, please visit our web site.
The Center views telehealth as a valuable means of providing clinical services and supervision. Interns will receive trainng in telehealth as a part of their internship at CMHC.
