The goal of the Predoctoral Residency in Paediatric Psychology at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) is to prepare new psychologists for the varied demands of professional practice in pediatric psychology using a scientist/practitioner model. The program is designed to ensure experience in assessment (developmental, psychoeducational, neuropsychological), psychological interventions and clinical research.
The program follows an evidence-based/best practices approach and a developmental framework to conceptualize a child's needs and challenges in the context of their families, their culture and their language of origin. Residents will have experience with children of all ages who present with psychological problems related to congenital, perinatal, medical, or acquired conditions, or mental health issues. Clinical research is highly valued and closely integrated with patient care activities. Residents attend a variety of didactic and patient-oriented rounds relevant to their specific rotations, as well as a health psychology didactics, Monthly Psychology Rounds, Quarterly Greater Toronto Area Psychology Seminars and virtual CCPPP didactic series.
The SickKids Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Strategy aims to advance equitable inclusion of diverse people and communities across SickKids’ care, research and education initiatives so that all can feel acknowledged, valued and respected. Aligned with our SickKids 2025 Strategic Plan, the EDI Strategy provides a path to boldly embed EDI in all that SickKids does and create safe and brave spaces for meaningful change.
