Interview process description:	Interviews (virtual) will be held on Friday, January 8th and Friday, January 15th. Interview days will involve multiple individual or small-group interviews, as well as group informational sessions. WPH interviews are a full-day event, and applicants should make arrangements to be available the entire time. Requests to meet with specific faculty will be solicited and accommodated when possible. Approximately 12 applicants will be scheduled for each of the two interview days. Interview requests will be emailed to applicants by the 19th day of November, with interviews scheduled for one of the two interview dates on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Other Requirements:	Employment for interns at the University of Pittsburgh requires Act 31, Act 33, Act 34, and Act 73 clearances prior to the first day of employment (September 1): https://www.hr.pitt.edu/clearances-training/clearances. Clearances are obtained via a third-party vendor that will reach out to each new intern in the spring prior to their fall start date in order to complete the process. The UPMC hospital system requires staff to obtain flu shots or a valid exemption each year. Vaccinations can be obtained for free at UPMC vaccination clinics or at a variety of off-site locations including pharmacies.

Program Description

Western Psychiatric Hospital (WPH) and the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine offer an APA-accredited, rotating internship in clinical psychology. We adhere to a 'clinical science' model of training and professional development in which the primary principles are a commitment to empiricism for guiding both clinical and scientific work, and an emphasis on the reciprocal relationship between clinical practice and the development and investigation of important questions for clinical research. We have four general goals for the program: (1) Develop and consolidate clinical skills in psychiatric assessment, conceptualization, and evidence-based psychological interventions; (2) Provide broad clinical experience within multidisciplinary treatment and research teams located within a university-based medical center; (3) Prioritize multicultural training through a cultural humility framework, with an emphasis on increasing awareness, knowledge, and skills that will improve clinical care and practice and facilitate the conduct of impactful research; and (4) Consolidate and enhance skills in clinical psychological science and supplement the clinical experience with adequate time and resources for empirical exploration of a specialty area. Our program provides two options: (a) a one-year general internship emphasizing clinical experience with major disorders in children and adults; and (b) a multiyear clinical research track that begins with the predoctoral internship and includes additional years of postdoctoral training to provide participants with the skills necessary to conduct clinical research. Applicants to the program initially commit to one year of training. Decisions about postdoctoral training are made in the spring of the internship year (and are subject to availability of postdoctoral training slots). Strengths of the program include assessment and diagnosis of psychopathology (both Axis I and Axis II disorders) in adults and children, psychosocial treatments of major disorders (with an emphasis on evaluation and outcome research), behavioral medicine, the application of new quantitative tools to clinical research problems, and a firm programmatic commitment to cultural humility.
