There are several steps required prior to reaching the interview phase at MDC LA. After review of your AAPI, you will be notified if you are selected to proceed to the next step of the process, which is applying for the position through USA Jobs. This application focuses on general requirements of federal employment, and submitting a CV that demonstrates you meet the basic qualifications of the internship position. Once qualified, you will then be invited to complete an interview. There are two components to the interview: a personnel interview and an interview with the psychology department staff. The personnel interview consists of a core values exam, an integrity interview, and a panel interview. This is only required at the first institution at which you interview, and results will be shared with all BOP sites for which you were invited to interview. Once you have passed that phase, you will proceed with the Psychology Services department interview at MDC LA.
Interns complete three rotations over the course of the year: Forensic, General Population, and Mental Health. In addition to their primary rotations, they will have responsibility for carrying an individual therapy caseload, providing trainings to staff, and conducting intake screenings with the cadre inmates throughout the year. By the end of the year, interns are familiar with the role of psychologists within the correctional setting; and have gained susbstantial experience with crisis intervention, brief/long-term assessment, the process of completing court-ordered evaluations, and providing evidence based treatment for clients with a wide variety of presenting problems.
