Details of the above affiliations Five of our faculty have a joint appointment with the Counseling Psychology PhD program. These faculty members work 60% in CAPS and 40% with the PhD program. Some of their duties include teaching coursework and practicum and serving on dissertation committees.

Interview process description:

BYU-CAPS will most likely be holding applicant interviews on December 2nd, 9th, and 16th of 2026 and January 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th of 2027.  Interviews consist of:

- An individual Q&A session with the Director of Training for 30 minutes in the morning

- A group Q&A with current interns for an hour at 11am(MDT) (this is not evaluative and is intended for intern applicants to ask current interns any questions they have)

- Three separate 30-minutee interviews with members of the training committee in the afternoon (1-3pm, MDT).

If there is a member of our faculty that you would like to talk to or meet with, requests to meet with specific faculty are welcome!  Interviews will ALL be conducted over teleconference software.

Program Description

The internship at BYU Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) trains generalists in a supportive atmosphere where interns' training needs are the priority. Interns are involved in the full range of services offered by a comprehensive university counseling center serving a student body of over 34,000 students. Training emphases include individual, couples and group psychotherapy; diversity/multiculturalism; crisis intervention; outreach and consultation; psychological assessment; integrating spiritual issues in therapy; and meeting interns' individual training goals. Training and experience in multicultural counseling are addressed through case assignment, supervision, consultation, clinical rotations, and didactic training. Twenty-four licensed psychologists offer a wide range of theoretical orientations in supervision and didactic training. Clinical rotations are offered in Group Therapy, Couples Therapy, Sexual Health, Diversity/Multicultural Counseling, Spirituality in Therapy, Outreach Services, Campus Housing, Stress Managment & Biofeedback Training, Testing and Assessment, Teaching, Research, Counseling Center Administration, and Compassion Focused Therapy. Interns are provided four hours per week of professional development/scholarly writing (e.g. dissertation writing, study for EPPP, research writing). Additionally, BYU-CAPS has a well-established therapy outcomes research program and interns may select a research rotation with one of the Center's research teams.
