Training staff rate application materials on standard criteria and conduct a performance-based interview (PBI). The PBI consists of a standard set of questions for each residency program, with some focus area including additional questions. Typically, we do an open house with information about our site and programs, and time to ask questions of current residents. We then break off into groups by residency program (Clinical, Clinical Health, Rehabilitation, and Neuropsychology) for information specific to that program and a chance to meet several supervisors from that program. Applicants can be put in contact with specific staff on request. Applicants are scheduled for an individual interview with 2-3 supervisors from the program and focus areas to which they have applied. Interviews will be scheduled for video, with potential in-person option. However, virtual interviews are our standard and preferred option. Applicants' ratings are not impacted by format of interview. Applicants are then ranked and the top applicant is offered the residency when the interview process is completed for that focus area. We use the APPA-CAS application system and follow all APPIC guidelines for application including honoring the Common Hold Date guidelines. An applicant has the best chance of matching with us by having a well-rounded background pertinent to working at the VA, strong justification or experience for the specialty and focus area, attention to diversity issues, and professional presentation of themselves.
The VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System has four full-time, separately APA Accredited Postdoctoral Residency programs with a total of up to 13 resident positions. The Clinical Psychology Residency has focus areas in Addictions, Psychosocial Rehabilitation, and Trauma Psychology. Clinical Health Psychology offers focus areas in Primary Care, Specialty Medicine Clinics, Headaches/Polytrauma, and Geropsychology. Rehabilitation Psychology and Clinical Neuropsychology each have one resident for a two-year residency. The CP, CHP, and RP Residencies follow a practitioner-scholar model, providing training for advanced competence in these areas. The Clinical Neuropsychology residency follows a scientist-practitioner training model. All residencies require completion of a scholarly project, please see our brochure for further details. Applicants to all residencies must be graduates of an APA Accredited program in clinical or counseling psychology and have successfully completed an APA Accredited internship. Residents must by physically and mentally fit to perform the essential functions of the training program, have vaccinations in accordance with CDC recommendations for healthcare workers, tuberculosis screening, flu vaccination in season, background security check, and possible random drug screen (all routine) prior to final appointment. An oath of office is required. Our complex training structure reflects our commitment to the career trajectories of all Residents.
