Program Description

The University of Miami Counseling Center internship program utilizes a General Practitioner Training Model in providing a closely supervised training experience in intervention, assessment, and outreach/consultation within the context of working with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds and lifestyles. It is our aim that interns who successfully complete the program will have developed the fundamental skills and knowledge to launch professional careers as health service psychologists in a wide array of clinical settings, not limited to a university counseling center. Efforts are made with interns to individualize their training activities in view of their specialty areas and past experience. The availability of summer external rotations in several diverse clinical areas and the involvement in our program of clinical practitioners from the South Florida community facilitate a well-rounded training experience. In addition to individual supervision, the program offers eight ongoing seminars/case conferences during the fall and spring semesters. The theoretical orientation of the training staff can be described as eclectic. Since the program adheres to a General Practitioner Training Model, previous counseling center experience is not required and students from both clinical and counseling programs are encouraged to apply.

In adherence to the profession wide competencies for doctoral Interns in health service psychology established by the American Psychological Association, our internship program facilitates achievement of competencies in the following domains: intervention, assessment, individual and cultural diversity, supervision, consultation and interprofessional / interdisciplinary skills, ethical and legal standards, professional values and attitudes, communication and interpersonal skills and research.

External Rotation--Interns are encouraged, but not required, to consider an external rotation of up to 200 hours during the summer semester at a clinical placement outside of the Counseling Center. The external rotation can provide interns with a broarder training experience by exposing them to clinical populations, treatment modalities and settings not available at the Counseling Center. While there are no guarantees regarding a specific placement, the rotation is arranged based upon the intern's interests and training needs.

Additional information about training opportunities: Not all rotations or training experiences may be available as described in the APPIC Directory. Please consult the program's application materials or their website at: www.miami.edu/counseling-center  for a complete description of the training opportunities available at this training site. IF the site has not updated their information by August 1, feel free to contact the Training Director for additional information.
