Brief description of the typical work day for an intern at this training site We offer 5 internship positions, each with a unique emphasis or rotation: 1) Campus Outreach to develop programming aligned with addressing social justice concerns, 2) Working with athletes and teams in Sport Psychology, 3) Supporting Undocumented Students through outreach and counseling, 4) Eating Disorders, and 5) General Clinical/Training Focus. Please see our website for more information: https://shcs.ucdavis.edu/about/employment/counseling-services-training-program Note that our Interns tend to stay for a 2nd year to deepen their work and expertise as post-doctoral residents. Trainees living in Davis tend to bike in to work, enjoying the sunny warm climate. The day typically begins with a training seminar, followed by an hour of an initial consultation with an incoming client, an hour of clinical prep for writing notes or doing case management, a follow-up hour with a client. Then, an hour lunch break and 3-4 hours of follow-up sessions with clients. A given workday may diversify that by providing group therapy, supervision, an outreach activity, or another type of meeting. Trainees are encouraged to have 45-minute follow-up sessions to have time to write brief follow-up notes, consult, or have a break. *Note that in-office/remote work involving teletherapy and telesupervision is an evolving part of our practice.

Program Description

The aims of the UC Davis Health Psychology Internship Program are to recruit and train ethical, clinically skilled, and culturally sensitive psychologists who are prepared for early career practice in health service psychology and to cultivate the attitudes and behaviors that promote a professional identity rooted in wellness through a combination of didactic education, experiential learning, mentorship, and supervision.

Our internship program's educational philosophy and training model is to provide training grounded in core competencies and the scientific principles of our profession, which emphasize the area of applied practice. The training staff realizes that the most critical learning occurs through providing service under a senior staff professional's direct supervision and mentorship. Such "learning by doing" is further guided, enriched, and deepened through seminars, consultations, and in-service staff development activities. Interns can participate in one of the following interest areas: general clinical/training, eating disorders, campus community outreach programming, sport psychology, and working with students who are undocumented or from mixed-status families.

Depending on funding and appropriateness for continuation, postdoctoral opportunities may be available for interns who complete their doctoral degree requirements and are interested in continuing as a Postdoctoral Resident.

See the website for detailed information about our internship program and Student Health and Counseling Services.

Our aims align with the university's and Student Health and Counseling Services' mission to utilize a student-centered approach that promotes inclusivity, innovation, well-being, and responsible stewardship of resources. The UC Davis SHCS setting provides extensive opportunities for clinical services and outreach activities to a diverse demographic of students.

We have particular interest areas, so while all Interns will do some campus outreach activities and may provide services to student clients who have eating disorder concerns, are student-athletes, or have undocumented status, Interns in different particular interest areas will have different mixes of presenting concerns in their caseloads. For example, the Intern working in the Eating Disorders track will have more of their caseload presenting with eating and body image concerns.
