Program Description

The Western Washington University Counseling and Wellness Center (CWC) is a unit of Counseling Health & Wellness, a unit within the Division of Academic Affairs, and is accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services (IACS). The CWC offers a wide range of counseling and student development services and is the primary mental health facility of the campus. The senior staff of the CWC spends roughly 60% of their time in direct client service, client-related activities, and supervision, with the remainder devoted to outreach, administration, consultation, training, and staff development activities. While the CWC utilizes a brief therapy model, there are opportunities for longer-term counseling. Staff members practice in a variety of counseling modes and represent several theoretical approaches to counseling and psychotherapy. Professional staff members are licensed mental health counselors, LMFTs, LCISWs, or licensed psychologists in the state of Washington. Interns devote a minimum of 25% of their time to direct service activities, including individual and group counseling, initial assessment interviews, daytime and after-hours on-call services, and psychological assessment. Interns also participate in a weekly 2-hour seminar, weekly staff meetings, bi-weekly peer consultation groups, a bi-weekly intern cohort meeting, and bi-weekly consult hour with Health Center staff. Interns are expected to co-facilitate at least one of the multi-session groups offered by the CWC. Involvement in outreach/consultation activities is also required.
