Brief description of the typical work day for an intern at this training site Interns daily schedule and experiences vary by clinic site; however, most interns work normal daily hours (8 am-5 pm) Monday-Friday, except for some sites may require working one day per week where they come in later and work until early evening (e.g., 7 or 8 pm). These requirements are laid out in the intern manual and discussed prior to internship so interns are aware of the expectations. More information about the sites can be found on our website.

Interview process description:

The National Psychology Training Consortium requires that the AAPI Online application service be used by all applicants in order to be considered for our internship training program. Each of our regions is considered a separate application and each site within our regions is listed as a separate experience to which someone can choose to apply. For example, applicants will find the following three application options within AAPI:

  • National Psychology Training Consortium – Central Region
  • National Psychology Training Consortium – Great Lakes Region
  • National Psychology Training Consortium – Cascades Region
  • National Psychology Training Consortium - Cy-Hawk Region 

Our individual sites are then listed much like you would see “tracks” or “rotations” listed within other internships. You can apply to as many or as few of these opportunities as you choose within one regional application (i.e. you still only pay for three applications even if you apply to 14 different locations!). However, due to the limitations of the AAPI, only one cover letter can be submitted. In your cover letter for each region, please indicate all the sites you are applying to in separate paragraphs listing the various ways you are a good fit for each of them. Our sites are well accustomed to this practice and will not penalize anyone for mentioning other sites in their cover letter.

The following information is required:

  • APPIC AAPI as designated on the online application
  • Three letters of reference

NPTC hosted a Virtual Open House in September 2023 providing a general overview of the training program as well as more specific details about the Cascades Region. Eligible applications are reviewed and ranked by a combination of NPTC staff and individual site directors. A select group of applicants are invited for interview. Notification of invitation to interview will be made by December 15th.

Sites in the Cascades Region will also host their own individual interview days in January. Applicants will be given date options to choose from for the site(s) they are invited to interview with. Interview days consist of multiple 30 minute individual interviews, group discussion, and introductions to the site, staff and area. These interviews take most of the day for the day selected. Other Requirements: Please note that travel to monthly didactics is required. Didactics is held for one day at the beginning of each month at one of the sites. Applicants should review the map located on the NPTC website (https://psychologyinterns.org/cascades-current-sites/) and make note of the distance between the site(s) they wish to apply and these locations. Sites will also make travel reimbursement considerations depending on the distance between the intern's office location and didactics. All NPTC Cascades Region sites require interns to receive the COVID-19 vaccine or an approved exemption prior to their start date. Many NPTC sites require background checks and drug screens prior to beginning the internship. Eligibility to begin internship, even after match, is contingent on a satisfactory background check, which, depending on the position, may include review of conviction records, credit histories, &/or driving records. If a matched intern fails to pass a background check or drug screen, NPTC reserves the right to withdraw the invitation to match with the intern. NPTC-Cascades accepts applicants from non-APA accredited schools, but only those that have had or that have been approved for an APA site visit.
Program Description

Welcome to the NPTC-Cascades Region! The National Psychology Training Consortium (NPTC) is a collaborative consortium which employs an empirically-informed competency-based practitioner-scholar model while training prospective psychologists in the integration, discipline and practice of clinical psychology focusing on provision of services in rural and underserved health care. The Cascades Region has been fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the APA since October 20th, 2019, with our next site visit occurring in 2023. NPTC-Cascades has been an APPIC member since 2017.

The Cascades Region is made up of three Community Health Center’s within the state of Washington and Oregon, HealthPoint, Community Health of Central Washington (CHCW), and Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic (YVFWC). These three organizations share a common value of providing future psychologists and medical providers training in a fully integrated community health center. Operating as behavioral health consultants (BHCs) via the Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) model, predoctoral interns will work alongside medical professionals and trainees to provide patients holistic care. Specifically, our health centers embrace the philosophy of GATHER (Reiter et al., 2018). Our BHCs are true Generalists, serving all ages and conditions seen in primary care. They strive to be Accessible to their community by being imbedded and fully integrated within primary care clinics and providing same-day access for patients and providers. Further, the BHCs are Team-oriented and work side-by-side with all medical personnel, including medical providers, nurses, medical assistants, pharmacists, interpreters, etc. We also value being Highly productive and applying population-based principles to behavioral health; meaning, we strive to provide meaningful and intentional interventions to as much of our community as possible. This value of high productivity also corresponds with our value of social justice, as our communities often do not have access to behavioral health providers. Our BHCs also value being Educators to our community and our medical organizations; essentially, we want our entire communities and health centers to be more aware of the interconnection between physical and behavioral health. Lastly, we want to be a Routine part of the health system and work to ensure that BHC involvement in patient care and clinic workflows is the expectation, rather than the exception. Due to our organizations being Community Health Centers, interns will be able to work with a variety of patients from different backgrounds, which are culturally diverse, and largely underserved. Further, our mission of being a CHC is rooted in social justice and ensuring healthcare is provided to every individual within our communities.

HealthPoint – HealthPoint has several clinic locations for our doctoral psychology internship program within 23 miles of Seattle. HealthPoint’s mission is to provide services to individuals and communities in King County that are unable to receive care in the city of Seattle. Each intern will be assigned to either one large clinic or two smaller clinics where he/she/they will split his/her/their time. All clinics will provide the same training opportunities and model of care, but clinics to have some variability in populations served and some individual clinic services (OBGYN, pediatrician, natural medicine providers are examples). Community Health of Central Washington (CHCW) is located in Yakima, Washington. Two hours southeast of Seattle, Yakima is a metropolitan agricultural community rich in culture and, for a health professional, rich in opportunities to make a difference in people’s lives. Interns matched to CHCW will provide services within three different clinic locations through specific rotations, including a full spectrum family medicine residency clinic, a pediatric clinic, and a rural clinic. Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic (YVFWC) offers pre-doctoral psychology internships in integrated primary care in Yakima, Washington. YVFWC employs the Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) model of behavioral health integration within primary care utilizing Behavioral Health Consultants (BHC). BHCs meet with patients and their primary care doctor and education, brief intervention, and holistic care as part of the primary care team. The 12-month program provides extensive clinical experiences, including focal areas that allow interns to offer same-day primary care services for underserved patients, with particular emphasis on pediatric and adolescent patients.
