Program Description

Maimonides is located in an ethnically diverse, multicultural neighborhood in Brooklyn, with unique opportunities for broad experiences in the field. Interns will participate in three rotations including inpatient, outpatient (adult and child), as well as a Wellness Recovery Program experience. Interns will have an opportunity to work with a variety of outpatients both in the Mental Health Center as well as in the Medical Center. This includes crisis intervention work in our Psych ED as well as initial intake interviewing. Rotations in health psychology and Psychiatric ED are included in the outpatient rotation. Interns are expected to be competent enough in assessment techniques to perform diagnostic evaluations in all settings, both comprehensive as well as brief batteries. We, therefore, require testing experience. The opportunity to work with culturally and ethnically diverse populations in this melting pot neighborhood is one of the most unique features of the Maimonides Internship.  The aim of our program is to produce a solidly trained early career psychologist. We identify ourselves as following the Practitioner-Scholar model. Our staff's theoretical orientations include behavioral, cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, and psychoanalytic and offer the interns a range of perspectives and treatment techniques. Supervision includes up to three to four hours of individual and one to two hours of group supervision a week. In addition, the opportunity for research exists following a human subjects review committee decision. Finally, didactic seminars are offered in a variety of areas to continue the process of instructive learning. It is our intention to take the broad base of learned material and assist the intern in the practical application of the theoretical techniques they have studied over the years in school. To apply please include one case summary and one psychological testing in addition to 3 letters of recommendation with your application.
