Applications are reviewed and all applicants are notified of their status by December 11th. A selected group of applicants are invited to attend one of three Interview days. For the 2024-2025 recruitment cycle, interview days will occur on January 5th, 8th and 12th. The interview days involve an overview of the program by the Director of Training, individual meetings with placement faculty and current fellows (interns), as well as informal opportunities to meet with current fellows. The total number of individual meetings varies depending on the specific placement and corresponding faculty within the placement, though in general, applicants can expect to have between 6-8 meetings (including the overview and informal meeting with fellows) throughout the day. Applicants can expect a detailed schedule prior to their interview day.
Our Interviews are Virtual. To support safe and equitable practices, and in keeping with national trainee feedback, we will continue to offer opportunities to interview virtually. No in-person interviews are available. Requests for in-person interviews or visits during the recruitment days are not accommodated.
Yale offers one of the nation’s premier internships in clinical and community psychology, which has been accredited by APA since 1970. In 2023, the training program was reviewed by the APA and earned re-acredidation for an additional 10 years. The next review is December 2032. Up to 14 interns train each year in one of 10 placements within a vibrant academic medical center where the emphasis is on state-of-the art clinical care, professional education, and research. Interns have placements at either Yale-New Haven Hospital or the Connecticut Mental Health Center. The training program embraces a scientist-practitioner model in which theory and evidence inform professional practice and each intern has protected time to pursue a scholarly activity. The internship is part of a nurturing professional community of psychologists that values and promotes diversity among the faculty, interns, populations served, and theoretical perspectives. A priority is placed on professional development, including assistance to students in securing opportunities after internship. Each year, many graduating interns remain at Yale to pursue postdoctoral training and research (though postdoctoral positions are neither promised or guaranteed). There are over 200 psychology faculty members in the Psychiatry Department and they are leaders in the field as evidenced by their record of grants, publications, awards, and roles in professional organizations and government-sponsored boards and committees.
