Program Description

The South Texas Veterans Health Care System has two APA-accredited post-doctoral Fellowship programs, one in Clinical Psychology and one in Neuropsychology.

The Neuropsychology Fellowship has four positions, and we accept two new fellows each year.  We participate in the APPCN match and interview at INS each year in February.

The Clinical Psychology Fellowship has ten positions in the following emphasis areas: Couples and Family is the only emphasis area that is funded annually, Geropsychology, Health, Palliative Care, Primary Care/Health, Psychosocial Rehabilitation for Serious Mental Illness, Rural Mental Health (2 positions), Substance Use Disorders/Homelessness, and Trauma Psychology.  The Rural Mental Health positions are located in Kerrville, Texas while the remainder of the positions are housed at the VA Medical Center and clinics in San Antonio.  Frequently we offer fellowship positions to our interns in the Geropsychology, Primary Care/Behavioral Health, Psychosocial Rehabiliation, Rural (1 of the 2 positions), and Trauma emphasis areas.  To be selected, our interns must have collected all of their dissertation data, be progressing satisfactorily in their internship, and be approved by their preceptor and Training Committee (all by mid-November of their internship year). These in-house selections are made by December 1 to allow time for open recruitment for any unfilled postdoctoral positions.

Every year we recruit nationally for Couples and Family, Health Psychology, Palliative Care, Rural Mental Health (1 of 2 positions), Substance Use Disorders/Homelessness, and the Neuropsychology positions.  Whichever positions are not filled by our interns are recruited nationally, also.
