See comprehensive on-line brochure (updated annually early fall).  40-hr intern program workweek in CARF-accredited historic state hospital with 1100+ beds, over half of which are secure forensic beds (83+ secure forensic beds for women). Even in the civil units, residents with forensic commitments occupy most of the beds. Psychology staff has independent responsibility for forensic evaluation reports. Flexible individualized internship focused on criminal forensic issues and public service to underserved adults. Unit placements rely on intern choice and group discussion. Can have more than one forensic unit placement during training year. Training and tasks represent a balance of assessment, treatment, & consultation. Interns use & refine clinical skills of interviewing, group & individual therapy, assessment, and testing, all done as part of multidisciplinary team within a holistic, recovery approach. In addition, interns gain forensic knowledge and skills to write court reports, provide competency restoration, conduct risk assessments, assess response style, and make NGI transfer & release recommendations. Plan, implement, and evaluate treatment, supervised by staff psychologists. Emphasis on mentor-style individual supervision, often in-vivo, plus weekly group supervision. Didactics emphasize forensic topics early in year, then become more general and include intern topic choices. Intern must have strong writing skills to produce well-organized, logical, clearly written reports for criminal courts, and the clinical maturity to provide services to individuals with severe mental illness, personality disorders, and behavioral disturbances. Intern is expected to make thoughtful choices among numerous options to help formulate cohesive individual training plan. Many interns have elected to stay for postdoctoral supervision in staff psychology jobs. During COVID-19 pandemic, in-person serviices continued with psychology staff and interns regarded as "essential."  Interns at this site, like other employees, who are designated "essential" employees may be called upon or assigned to perform essential functions on-site for designated periods of time during emergencies.
