We are pleased to announce the availability of 13 first-year positions in our Postdoctoral Fellowship program, beginning in August 2024. All fellows participate in advanced training in clinical psychology, with a focus in one of 10 areas: PTSD, Substance Use, Couple and Family Care, Primary Care, Rehabilitation, Behavioral Medicine & Pain, Mental Health (Anxiety and Mood Disorders), Mental Health Intensive Services, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Neuropsychology. Our program is APA accredited in 1) Clinical Psychology, 2) Neuropsychology, and 3) Rehabilitation Psychology.
The PTSD fellowship emphasizes the development of research skills and research productivity pertinent to PTSD, in conjunction with the Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC). The MIRECC fellow will spend 75% time over two years pursuing an independent, mentored clinical research project leading to publication and grant submission. The fellow may also collaborate with a team of interprofessional investigators on projects concerning treatment outcome, health behavior and/or health services research in PTSD. The remaining 25% time will be spent in direct clinical service. One first-year position is available.
The Substance Abuse fellowship emphasizes the interprofessional treatment of substance use disorders in conjunction with the Seattle VA's national Center of Excellence in Substance Abuse Treatment and Education (CESATE). The resident will spend 60-80% time working within interprofessional teams providing evidence-based treatments and practices to Veterans with a variety of addictive disorders. Additional time is devoted to didactic seminars, program development and evaluation, and clinical research. The duration of the CESATE fellowship is one year. The possibility of renewal for a second year, following completion of the accredited fellowship, can be considered for fellows with further advanced goals in administration, education or clinical research. Two first-year positions are available.
The Neuropsychology fellowship emphasizes the neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation of cognitive disorders that are acquired through injury or neurodegeneration. It is designed to comply with Houston Conference guidelines. The Rehabilitation Psychology fellowship emphasizes rehabilitation services and neuropsychological assessment provided to Veterans seen in specialty clinics for physical trauma. The duration of both the Neuropsychology and Rehabilitation fellowship is two years; the first year of the fellowship is included in our accredited clinical program. Each track allows for up to 40% protected research time for qualified applicants. One first-year position is available in each track.
The remaining residencies are one-year clinical positions with up to 40% protected time for clinical research, quality improvement research, and/or program development and evaluation. The Primary Care fellowship emphasizes the delivery of integrated mental and behavioral health services to Veterans within integrated primary care medical settings, utilizing interprofessional models of care delivery, housed within the Seattle VA’s national Center of Excellence in Primary Care. The Behavioral Medicine fellowship emphasizes interprofessional training in the care of patients with Chronic Pain, with co-occurring mental health and/or substance use disorders, integrated within primary care and specialty medical settings. The Couple & Family Care fellowship emphasizes the delivery of evidence-based services for couples and families, with a special emphasis on developing expertise in Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT). The Intensive Services fellowship emphasizes the delivery of evidence-based care in acute care, outpatient and inpatient settings for patients with serious and persistent mental health disorders. The Mental Health fellowship emphasizes the evidence-based assessment and treatment of patients with acute and longer-term difficulties with anxiety, mood, and trauma disorders in an interprofessional outpatient setting. The DBT fellowship emphasizes extensive training in Comprehensive DBT, supplemented by experience in traditionaloutpatient mental health. We anticipate that two positions will be available in the Primary Care, Mental Health, and Couple/Family tracks. One first-year position is available in each of the remaining tracks.
Regardless of the focus area chosen, all fellows attain advanced skills and knowledge in a common core of professional domains, including ethics and professional standards, research strategies, teaching and supervision, cultural diversity and individual differences, assessment and intervention, professional development, and interprofessional consultation. Training occurs within a Scientist-Practitioner framework, within a University-affiliated and academically-oriented healthcare environment.
