Brief description of the typical work day for an intern at this training site Intern daily activities are intertwined with the daily activities of all CAPS Staff. Each day consists of about four hours of direct service, including individual and group counseling, provision of supervision, or intake assessment. A typical day also includes a meeting, some form of supervision, and/or a training-related activity (seminar, consultation team meeting), as well as administrative time.

Interview process description:

After two rounds of detailed application reviews by the Training Director/Training Committee and CAPS Staff members, a pool of applicants will be invited for virtual interviews. All applicants are notified by e-mail on or before 12/15 regarding their interview status. CAPS conducts Zoom interviews of 30-45 minutes in length during the first two weeks of January. Applicants selected for an interview will receive an e-mail with instructions on how to schedule the interview. Multiple CAPS Staff members, including current interns, participate in the interview and applicants are offered time to ask questions about our site. After the interview, applicants have the option of having CAPS Staff members (including interns) contact them as a courtesy to follow-up and answer any additional questions they may have about our site.

Applicants who wish to visit CAPS are welcomed and are requested to contact the Training Director to make arrangements for a visit. We ask for at least one week's notice so we can ensure that staff members will be available to conduct a tour of our facility and answer questions. We host a virtual Open House event for our applicants who have completed our interview process. This Open House will occur after all interviews are completed, but before the end of January. Attendance to the Open House is a voluntary and lack of attendance does not affect ranking. Please note that we at CAPS abide by all APPIC Match Policies.

Program Description

The Internship year at CAPS is designed to promote the developmental process in which interns move from the role of student to that of professional with special emphasis placed on issues related to multicultural competence. Interns are encouraged to take an active role in tailoring their training to meet their professional goals, interests, and developmental needs as they complete the required elements of the internship. Every effort is made to provide a supportive and accepting environment that models and attends to personal growth and the establishment of professional identity.

Clinical service training activities include 14 to 19 hours per week of individual, couples (limited), and group counseling as well as conducting initial assessments/intake interviews. Other required activities include provision of supervision, outreach programming, crisis intervention and debriefing, and research/dissertation work. Core training activities include three weeks of orientation, weekly seminars, primary individual supervision, supervision of supervision, supervision of group counseling, secondary supervision, and consultation team membership. Interns may also choose to participate in a number of training opportunities that can supplement their core training activities. Examples of these areas of emphasis include intensified training in addiction, outreach, sport psychology, trauma focused treatment, and DBT treatment.

Supervisors evaluate each Interns' progress formally at the end of each semester. Supervisors assess current strengths and growth areas, and these evaluations are used to focus the next semester's supervision. Interns are asked to evaluate their supervisory experiences throughout the year, feedback about their Internship experience is encouraged during the year, and they formally evaluate elements of the entire training program at the end of the Internship year. While all CAPS Staff members play a role in Internship training, primary supervision is provided by CAPS'  licensed psychologists who have at least three years post-license experience. CAPS is one of a small number of university counseling center internship sites housed within an integrated health care setting that is accredited by The Joint Commission. This distinction gives our interns an excellent training opportunity as they work alongside medical professionals to serve Clemson students.
