Brief description of the typical work day for an intern at this training site Dependent on rotation assignment and optional training activities, average 45 hours per week. Individual intern schedules and training locations will vary based on individual training goals and optional rotations selected. Generally, interns can expect to be engaged in onsite clinical training, scholarship, or administration tasks M-F, 8AM-430PM. Some clinical training options may include an earlier start time or later end, depending on opportunities selected by the intern.

Interview process description:

Applications are due by November 13th and applicants will be notified by December 3rd whether they are offered a virtual interview, on a wait list, or no longer under consideration by our site.  

Applicants must be in a doctoral program in clinical or counseling psychology and must have completed sufficient coursework and clinical experience equivalent to completion of the master's degree. This is required for our state licensure board. All applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Please note our APA-accredited internship offers THREE training tracks:

Health Service Psychology Track (APPIC# 163711) - 3 internship positions available

Child Clinical Psychology Track (APPIC# 163712) - 2 internship positions available

Adult Neuropsychology Track (APPIC# ) - 1 internship position available

All interviews will be virtual. Health Service Psychology Track interviews are planned for Jan 8, Jan 15, and Jan 22, 2027. Child Clinical Psychology Track interviews are planned for Jan 7, Jan 14, and Jan 21, 2026. Adult Neuropsychology Track interviews are planned for Jan 13 and Jan 20, 2027. Interviews are track-specific.

Applicants are also invited to sign up for general internship information sessions with current interns.

All interview and information session scheduling is completed through the NMS scheduler - applicants invited to interview will receive schedule links and more information in the invitation email. Due to the complexity in coordinating multiple faculty schedules across multiple training clinics, we are typically not able to offer interviews on days not listed above or to accommodate overflow scheduling.

Other Requirements: Applicants must have a master's degree in psychology as verified by transcript by start of internship or equivalent coursework and clinical experience to master's degree standing, as verified by transcript, at the start of the internship. This is required for our state licensure board. Additionally, CAMC is a substance-free work environment for employees, patients, and visitors. Medical marijuana is treated the same as any other prohibited substance under CAMC employment requirements. Program Description

Our long-running psychology internship is sponsored by the Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) and is included as a graduate medical education program in the CAMC Institute for Academic Medicine. The medical center is made up of four hospitals: CAMC General Hospital, CAMC Memorial Hospital, CAMC Teays Valley Hospital and CAMC Women and Children's Hospital. It offers a number of specialized inpatient, outpatient, prevention and emergency services, and extensive state of the art facilities and centers of excellence for the provision of clinical care. CAMC’s mission is “Striving to provide the best health care to every patient, every day”, which directly aligns with the aims of the psychology internship program. The CAMC pillars include being the best place to receive patient-centered care, the best place to work, and the best place to learn. The Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry at CAMC is "home base" for the psychology internship and interns enjoy collaborative, interdisciplinary didactic and training opportunities with our child psychology fellowship, neuropsychology fellowship, categorical psychiatry residency, and integrated internal medicine-psychiatry residency. In the ambulatory clinic, interns can pursue focal training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy for adults and adolescents, cognitive behavioral therapy,  Parent Child Interaction Therapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and comprehensive assessments. In addition, our interns participate in training and service delivery with ambulatory clinics and hospital units throughout the CAMC system, as well as community partners, providing opportunities for additional training in integrated primary care and consultation and liaison services.

We are pleased to offer three internship tracks to meet applicant's training goals. The Health Service Psychology Track focuses on work with adult patients and offers required rotations in outpatient psychological services (ambulatory clinic), inpatient psychiatry, hospital consultation and liaison services, and assessment. The Child Clinical Psychology Track offers targeted training in outpatient child clinical psychology services (ambulatory clinic), pediatric consultation and liaison in specialty pediatrics clinics, and child assessment. The Adult Neuropsychology track provides a robust neuropsychology training experience to well-position interns for post-doctoral trainingin neuropsychology, in addition to furthering intervention competencies in the ambulatory and hospital settings. All interns participate in interdisciplinary grand rounds and other didactic opportunties with psychiatry residents, internship-specific didactics, and a supervision seminar to advance supervision knowledge and skills toward readiness for practice.
