Brief description of the typical work day for an intern at this training site Activities interns are involved in on a day-to-day basis varies depending on assigned rotation/unit, so there is no "typical" work day. An idea of activities interns engage in during the week is as follows: Monday through Thursday- team meeting on assigned unit; patient-related clinical activities (e.g., groups, individual therapy cases, testing/ assessments); other patient-related activities (e.g., writing progress notes, writing reports); supervision; peer supervision of psychology externs. Fridays are typically reserved for seminars and other training activities.

For TY 2021-2022, all interviews will be conducted virtually via Google Meet on one of the following dates:  December 7, 8, 9, 14, 16, and 17, 2020. Applicants notified by email. The three hour interview will include an individual interview with Training Director, structured interview with two psychology staff followed by informal meeting time, and meeting with one of the current interns.  We typically interview 24 applicants.

The internship program is committed to providing access for all people with disabilities or special/ individual needs and will provide reasonable accommodations with advance notice. If invited for an interview, the program will solicit information from candidates regarding need for accommodations.

Note: If invited for an interview, completion of State of Maryland employment application (MS-100) is required prior to the interview- this is done online-- instructions will be provided. Other required forms include a Criminal Conviction Report and Authority for Release of Information Form.  Specific and detailed information about these additional materials, including instructions and deadlines, will be sent to candidates via email.

Other Requirements: Applicants only from APA-accredited programs are accepted; a total of 425 combined face-to-face Intervention/Assessment Hrs, preferably with 50% of those hours with adult populations; 1 comprehensive psychological test report with an adult patient/client (minimal intellectual/cognitive and personality testing- NOT a forensic or neuropsychological report). If you are invited for an interview at Spring Grove Hospital Center, you will need to complete and submit additional application materials required by the State of Maryland PRIOR to your interview. These include the MS-100 State Application, Criminal Conviction Report, and Authority for Release of Information Form. Professional Liability insurance coverage (by start date of internship in August) is also a requirement of the facility. If you are selected /matched as an intern, you will be required have a pre-employment physical and TB testing as a newly hired employee. Further, your State of Maryland employment is contingent upon undergoing and passing a criminal background check. Please note- a record of conviction is not an automatic bar to State of Maryland employment and each case is considered on its own merits. BRIEF DESCRIPTION (updated July 2020)

Spring Grove Hospital Center (SGHC) is a large psychiatric hospital owned and operated by the State of Maryland, and is under the governance of the Maryland Department of Health. It is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. The hospital provides a broad spectrum of inpatient psychiatric services to adults and adolescents. Psychology interns are State of Maryland employees and are currently designated as essential which is defined as "an employee whose duties are of such a nature as to require the employee to report for work or remain at the work site to continue agency operations during an emergency situation. The appointing authority or designee may excuse emergency essential employees from duty, or require their presence, as circumstances and conditions warrant, to maintain minimum staffing requirements for the affected facilities."

The Psychology Department at SGHC offers a generalist Psychology Internship Training Program which employs a practitioner-scholar model of training. The Internship is designed to train and prepare competent, health service psychology practitioners who will deliver clinical psychology services and lead mental health providers in the delivery of services to the public in various settings, with a particular focus on service provision to the seriously mentally ill patient population. The program strongly encourages the integration of the theoretical and empirical literature in all areas of professional decision-making. The program further trains and develops early career psychologists who are able to critically evaluate and use available literature in the field and who will approach assessment, intervention, and consultation from a scholarly, evidence-based approach.  At the same time, the program encourages interns to develop a unique identity consistent with the best practices in the field, professional ethics and values, and the individual’s own personal therapeutic style with a sensitivity towards diversity and individual differences.

Emphasis of the Internship is on incorporating evidenced-based validated clinical skills with a diverse SMI inpatient adult and adolescent population. Two primary rotations over the course of the year typically include: Admissions- adult or adolescent and Continued Care-adult. Opportunity for enhanced/specialized training one to two days per week (e.g., forensics, substance abuse) may be available during the second rotation. While forensic populations are dispersed throughout the hospital the primary focus of the internship is on general clinical services (i.e., psychological assessment, individual and group interventions, behavioral consultation). Other training activities include peer supervision of psychology externs, training in CBTp, and making a presentation to the psychology department staff focusing on a research-based topic related to health service psychology. Didactics (year-long) include Diversity, Supervision, Evidenced-Based Practice, and Neuropsychology.
