Other Requirements: Matching with our site is CONTINGENT upon meeting all accessions requirements (medical, legal, etc.) for commission into the U.S. Army (e.g., active duty service). Applicant MUST apply with your local U.S. Army Healthcare Recruiter at www.goarmy.com, ASAP. Select "Medical (AMEDD)" as your interest to search for a Healthcare Recruiter in your area. DO NOT WAIT for interview notification before speaking with a Recruiter. Interns incur an Active Duty Service Obligation (currently 3 years following licensure or completion of postdoc residency, whichever comes later).
Program Description

The internship will accept a maximum of 6 active-duty military interns for the 2024-2025 training year (civilian intern positions are not available).  The internship is a 12-month generalist program based on the practitioner-scholar model.  Interns incur a 3-year Active Duty Service Obligation that begins after licensure (may be licensed in any state) or the completion of the postdoc residency, whichever is the latter.  Although the internship officially starts in October, interns begin their training in Jun/Jul by attending the AMEDD Direct Commissioning Course (Ft. Sill, OK) and/or the AMEDD Basic Officer Leadership Course (JBSA-Sam Houston, TX).  Interns who have met all internship requirements and whose dissertations are complete are expected to participate in a one-year post-doctoral Clinical Psychology Residency Program (also at Tripler Army Medical Center) which specializes in the advanced application of clinical psychology in a military setting (military psychology).  There is no additional service requirement for the Residency Program.

The internship program's goal is to establish solid generalist skills as a clinical psychologist working with military and civilian populations in a variety of outpatient settings.  The core rotation of the program is the Outpatient Clinic (Adult) and Adult Specialty Evaluation Clinic rotation with additional training opportunities in Neuropsychology,  Child and FamilyBehavioral Medicine, and Intensive Outpatient.  Interns are also provided additional training opportunities in a variety of unique behavioral health settings such as hospital consultation services, pain management, sleep clinic, TBI clinic, inpatient psychiatric unit, etc.  There is an emphasis on adult assessment and evidence-based clinical intervention skills.  Interns also receive unique training and experience in cultural diversity.  The internship provides a comprehensive professional educational program, including several workshops conducted by nationally recognized experts in behavioral health.  All interns are required to complete their dissertations/CRPs by the end of the internship. They have access to extensive hospital library research resources to provide assistance as well as a research psychologist.  Interns have the opportunity to interact with a diverse military and civilian internship faculty, post-doctoral residents and fellows, and graduate practicum students.  There is also a substantial opportunity to collaborate with psychiatry residents and fellows.

Applicants who have not successfully defended their doctoral or clinical research project proposal before the Army CPIP board in January 2023 will not be considered.  If an applicant completes the proposal after the application deadline, the applicant must have their Director of Clinical Training from their doctoral institution send a letter certifying completion to the TAMC Clinical Psychology Internship Program at ATTN: LTC Cara Cox Coleman, Director of Training, Department of Behavioral Health, Clinical Psychology Internship Program Director, Tripler Army Medical Center, 1 Jarrett White Road, Tripler AMC, HI 96859-5000.  There are no exceptions to this policy.

*All applicants applying to Tripler Army CPIP must contact a local Army Medical Department (AMEDD) Recruiter to begin the concurrent Army onboarding process.  Contacting the Recruiter no later than August is highly recommended to allow the applicant and the Recruiter sufficient time to ensure all Army application criteria (e.g., health physicals, medical waivers, security clearance applications, etc.) are completed promptly.  Find the nearest Recruiter at www.goarmy.com or 1-800-USA-ARMY.  Once logged into the site, select the "Locate a Recruiter" link at the bottom of the page.  Once inside the link, identify "Active Duty" as your Area of Interest, enter your zip code, and a list of local recruiting stations will appear.  Please contact the "Medical (AMEDD) Recruiter" office.  Your Recruiter will assist you in collecting the application materials and completing the application process.  All applicants for the Army TAMC CPIP must also complete the APPIC Application for Psychology Internship and select the Tripler CPIP as a site of interest.

*Applicants must upload the following additional documents to the APPI: one additional letter of recommendation (three total), Curriculum Vitae, and a de-identified written sample of a psychological assessment report, including formal psychometrics, reflecting the applicant's actual clinic work.  Applicants who do not submit all materials as per above will not be considered.  Please refer to our website for more information about our program and the application process.
