The primary focus of the internship program is to train interns to become professional psychologists who can competently provide a full range of professional activities with diverse populations. The Counseling Center provides a broad range of counseling and mental health services to the university community, including individual, couples and group counseling, crisis intervention, assessment, and consultation to faculty and staff through in-person and/or tele-communication means. The Center works in active collaboration with other units on campus, and is strongly committed to outreach and consultation to the university community. Interns are actively involved with outreach activities and also may have an opportunity to co-teach select academic courses with professional staff members. Interns are involved in the full range of Center activities, and work closely with the senior staff in mentoring relationships. Training is based on a Practitioner-Scholar model which emphasizes the practice of psychology in a contemporary Counseling Center setting. The UC Irvine program has a longstanding commitment to diversity issues and to valuing the importance of cultural and individual differences among our staff and interns. Our staff is diverse in terms of ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, gender, age, and ability. We have been fortunate to recruit a highly diverse group of outstanding interns over the years. In addition, UC Irvine has an extremely diverse student body, providing interns with the opportunity to gain specialized training and experience in multicultural counseling.
