Brief description of the typical work day for a postdoc at this training site Residents typically work 8:30am-5pm, including one late night a week which is dependent upon site specific closing times. The resident’s clinical day may consist of the following events: several 30 minute client sessions; up to two 45 minute client sessions; one one-hour intake spot; and behavioral health WHO/walk in slots a day. Walk in slots are when the resident is expected to sit in the medical pod and take warm hand offs from the medical provider as needed if they are on site. Residents also attend clinic team meetings on clinic days to collaborate with other providers regarding adult or child care. Residents have one didactic day a week, where they participate in one hour of group supervision and have a two to three hour didactic of various topics related to providing treatment in this setting. Two hours of individual supervision a week are provided to each resident, where at least one of which is in person when residents are able to work on site. Residents participate in an eight week training seminar on developing supervisory skills and have the opportunity to co-facilitate group supervision for psychiatric nurse practitioner residents or psychology practicum students, as well as an individual peer consultation experience to practice supervisory skills. Residents attend a monthly multicultural case conference where they discuss themes they have experienced in treatment or in the supervisory space related to different aspects of identity. Residents participate in a quality improvement training curriculum, attend CHCI's behavioral health quality improvement committee meetings, and work on an agency quality improvement project where they can apply the principles learned. Other opportunities include: participation in ECHO seminars related to HIV/HEP-C, chronic pain, medication assisted treatment, and pediatric treatment; participation in the agency’s institutional review board or Process Improvement (PI) committees; participating in CHCI's multicultural committee; as well as conducting research in collaboration with the Weitzman institute. The training placement is hybrid: residents work in person as well as remotely.

Program Description

The APA-accredited Postdoctoral Residency Program at Community Health Center, Inc. offers a top-notch level of training within an integrated care setting that is pivotal for any clinician due to its breadth and diversity of experiences.  The opportunities to tailor one's training experience to focus on specific areas of interest as well as the emphases placed on fostering leadership, quality improvement and supervisory skills are unique aspects that set the residency program apart from others.  CHC offers the opportunity to work within a fast-paced environment, where residents are able to function independently as providers while experiencing a supportive training structure.  The residency program sites are positioned at fixed, mobile, and school-based locations in both rural and urban cities across the state of Connecticut.  Our residents provide comprehensive care across the lifespan through an integrated approach to meet the needs of the diverse and often underserved clients at CHC.  We value diversity among our trainees and staff, including aspects of identity and varied personal and professional experiences.  Our aim is to support the development of our residents in becoming the next generation of psychologists by creating a culture and training experience that fosters openness, curiosity, cultural humility, and respect while working with clients and colleagues within the field.  Servimos a muchos clientes hispanohablantes y por lo tanto, los residentes de psicología tienen la oportunidad de proveer psicoterapia en Español.
