Orientation Program (3 weeks at the start of the year): Orientation to the NAAPTC Doctoral Internship Program, RAMS Outpatient Clinic, Clinical Rotations, & the San Francisco Community Mental Health System.
Clinical Work at the RAMS Outpatient Clinics: Individual, group, & family psychotherapy with adult & child clients; clinical case management; new client intakes; initial/ongoing clinical assessment & treatment plan development; comprehensive psych assessment/testing; clinical charting & billing; multidisciplinary team work. In an average week, this includes: 9 therapy hrs; 1 hr of clinical intakes; 2 hrs of psychological testing; about 2 hrs of non-direct casework & charting/documentation as needed.
Clinical Rotation Training: To develop a better understanding of the different levels of treatment in the community mental health system, each intern is assigned to 2 external clinical rotations, which are selected from the following options: Vocational Rehabilitation Support Services, Residential Treatment, & School-Based Counseling & Professional Development Support Services. Each intern spends 8 hours per week at a rotation site delivering clinical services, participating in multidisciplinary teamwork, & receiving on-site training & supervision.
Clinical Supervision: 2 hrs weekly of individual supervision on outpatient therapy cases (1 hr with training director/primary supervisor & 1 hr with a staff psychologist who serves as delegated supervisor); 1 hr of group supervision on psychotherapy cases with an external delegated supervisor; 1 hr of group supervision/assessment seminar & 1 hr of individual supervision on assessment cases with assessment supervisor; 1 hr of Cultural Competency Project supervision with training director (in the summer, after interns complete their Cultural Competency Projects, this is replaced by 1 hr of Professional Issues Seminar with the training director); 1 hr of rotation group supervision, supplemented by hands-on modeling & treatment team consultation (formats differ at different rotations); choice of 1, 2, or 3 elective hour-long supervision groups: Group Consultation/Seminar on Working with Children & Families; Clinical Understanding & Sociocultural Considerations in Working with Community Mental Health Clients; Psychodynamic Conceptualization in Working with Severely Mentally Ill & Fragile Patients
Teamwork Meetings Monthly hr-long training group meeting with training director (includes practicum trainees); monthly 1.5-hr-long Inter-program Clinical Grand Rounds; weekly multidisciplinary team meetings at rotation sites; twice a month documentation training & consultation.
Didactic Seminars: Weekly 1.5-hr-long Intern & Trainee Seminar (includes practicum trainees); weekly 1.5-hr-long In-Service Clinical Training (includes practicum trainees, postdoctoral fellows, & clinical staff); weekly 1-hr-long Assessment Seminar; in-service trainings at rotation sites (formats vary); All RAMS Training Series (format varies; including half or full-day events).
Clinical Case Conferences: Monthly 1.5-hr-long Adult Clinical Case Conference & monthly 1.5-hr-long Child Clinical Case Conference at the Outpatient Clinic (includes practicum trainees, postdoctoral fellows, & clinical staff from multiple programs); case conferences at rotation sites (formats vary); weekly 1.5-hr-long Intern & Trainee Clinical Case Conference (4 months in 2nd part of year).
Scholarly Projects and Professional Presentation of Work: To facilitate development of interns’ professional identity as psychologists, the program requires 3 different types of scholarly products that integrate empirical clinical material with the body of professional literature.
- 1 individual Cultural Competency Project, including a written treatise & an in-service oral presentation to staff & trainees from multiple RAMS programs
- 3 formal clinical case presentations, including a comprehensive write-up, an hour of process notes, & an oral presentation/group discussion (one child or adult case is presented to an audience of peers at the Intern and Trainee Case Conference; one adult & one child case are presented to an outside expert discussant & a large audience of clinicians at the RAMS Adult & Child Clinical Case Conferences, respectively)
- 4 psychological assessment reports on a comprehensive battery of tests, each to include: integrative case write-up, recommendations to the client & feedback to referral source. Two assessment cases are to be presented in the Assessment Seminar
Peer Supervision: Interns are expected to co-facilitate the Intern & Trainee Clinical Case Conference & to independently facilitate one case conference session each (under the guidance from the training director)
