Brief description of the typical work day for a postdoc at this training site The typical work day varies tremendously depending on the particular specialty of a given postdoc position. All of our postdoc positions are in APA-accredited programs, and we have three programs in: clinical psychology, clinical health psychology, and clinical neuropsychology.

Program Description

New Mexico VA Healthcare System (NMVAHCS) supports 9 Postdoctoral Psychology Residents in total.  There are 2 positions in our APA-accredited Clinical Neuropsychology Fellowship, 3-4 positions in our one-year APA-accredited Clinical Health Psychology Fellowship, and 4-5 positions in our APA-accredited Clinical Psychology Fellowship with the following emphasis areas:  2 residents with a PTSD emphasis; 2 residents with a Serious Mental Illness emphasis; 1 resident with a Couples/Family emphasis. The residencies emphasize  leadership skills, cultural awareness, program evaluation, evidence-based practice, and licensure during the residency. Residents can spend up to 20% of their time in program evaluation or research activities. NMVAHCS has an evidence-based focus for training, and is a scientist-practitioner program.   We have national trainers or supervisors in Prolonged Exposure, Cognitive Processing Therapy, ACT, CBT for Insomnia, CBT for Depression, and Motivational Interviewing on faculty, and residents are able to take part in multi-day trainings and/or supervised experiences in these treatments. Residents are encouraged to expand their professional repertoire to include administration, consultation, supervision, and program evaluation activities in addition to assessment, intervention, and research.
