At Ohio University, we have always believed that requiring an onsite interview would create an undue financial burden on graduate students and is a social justice concern. Although we would love to share the beauty of Athens, Ohio and the surrounding community with prospective applicants, we have never offered onsite interviews and have successully matched with wonderful interns using a virtual process. Therefore, OU CPS offers video conference interviews (via Zoom) which will take place mid December and conrtinue early January, if needed. The conference interviews are roughly 45-50 minutes in duration. The prospective applicant will interview with two or more full-time staff (which may or may not include the training director) and a current intern. If applicants have questions of specific staff members or the training director, they are encouraged to email those staff members directly, or set up a meeting.
At Ohio University's Counseling and Psychological Services, interns engage in structured training and professional practice designed to provide a sequence of increasingly complex professional experiences, roles, and responsibilities. To accomplish this, we use a developmental mentorship training philosophy. Our program is designed to build upon previously acquired skills and knowledge, fostering the competencies for delivering professional psychological services. We provide graduated learning opportunities with increased responsibility as the year progresses, and focus on the developmental process and transitions of interns as they move from student/learner in the classroom, to learner/practitioner in the field, to entry-level professional psychologist. The basic components of our training program are 1) a strong emphasis on the growth process of interns throughout their experience of socialization into the field of professional psychology, and 2) the amount and quality of supervision and mentoring interns receive from experienced clinicians. There are a number of core training experiences, including individual and group psychotherapy, crisis intervention, mental health consultation, outreach and organizational consultation, supervision of practicum students, and clinical assessment. In addition, each intern chooses from several Area of Foci in areas such as substance use assessment and treatment, eating disorders treatment, trauma-informed care, or training. The Area of Focus gives the intern a chance to work more closely with an experienced clinician in an area of interest to that intern. CPS completes comprehensive evaluations of interns at several points during the academic year. Copies of these evaluations will be supplied to the home academic program of the intern. Please note, CPS does not, however, complete additional evaluations from individual academic programs.
