Brief description of the typical work day for an intern at this training site There is great variability in schedules. Interns are CHLA hospital hourly employees an work a maximum of 45 hours per week. The scheduling of those hours is relatively flexible. Assessment clinic is an (almost) full day once per week and didactics are on Fridays so those two days are structured. On other days, interns may spend the morning in supervision meetings or specialty track case conference. Afternoons are mostly dedicated to client care.

Interview process description:

Five interview dates are offered in January.  Interviews are conducted virtually.  The interview day consistes of a review of the program, an open house where all the specialty rotations present, a clinical and an assessment interview, a Spanish language screen (if requested), and a meeting with the current interns. Applicants need to be present for the entire interview day. All interview days will take place in January.

Program Description

The Childrens Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) offers a comprehensive Clinical Child and Pediatric Psychology Predoctoral Internship Training Program. This American Psychological Association (APA) accredited training program offers two required placements and one specialty clinical placement. The two required clinical placements represent generalist skills of a child-focused psychologist: Child/Family Therapy and Psychological Assessment. The specialized placement focuses on an area of specialty practice which currently include: Pediatric Psychology, Early Childhood Mental Health, Assessment Consultation and Evaluation, Trauma Psychology, and Adolescent Medicine.The training program is designed to prepare doctoral candidates to assume the role of a professional psychologist in an academic, or private or public clinical service setting. Through didactic lectures and seminars, intensive supervision, and ample direct patient contact, interns receive comprehensive training experiences in psychological assessment, treatment/therapy, interdisciplinary consultation, and community involvement. The internship program provides training in the principles of child and adolescent psychology as applied to a range of emotional and behavioral issues (and often co-occurring developmental or medical complexity) in urban, diverse, underserved populations through supervised experience in outpatient mental health clinics, community clinics and/or pediatric hospital units.
