Details of the above affiliations The 2 SMI-Recovery Track positions are affiliated with Palo Alto University's Diversity and Community Mental Health PhD program and open only to applicants from that program. Palo Alto University supported and collaborated in the accreditation of the program in 2013, funds the 2 position stipends, and provides the internship access to research library and testing resources.

Interview process description:

Interview invitations are extended by email after the application closing date and interviews are scheduled by email in December for dates in January. Interviews will be conducted remotely, either via telephone or teleconference, and we may have an option for in-person interviews for those interested (TBD). These will include individual interviews with 2-3 members of our training faculty and a group meeting with our current interns and training director for general information and Q&A. Contact information is also provided for past/current interns for additional questions. Interviews will be scheduled in early-to-mid January of 2024.

Program Description

We prepare psychologists for professional practice in public mental health and to provide emergency and continuing care to a diverse client population with a wide range of challenging behavioral health needs. Services include mental health evaluation, crisis intervention, community outreach, consultation, and psychotherapy for individuals, families, and groups. All interns gain supervised clinical experience in crisis stablization (pending return to in-person services), intake assessment, general outpatient practice, and community-based service delivery to a broad-range population. Each intern spends approx. 1.5 days working within an interdisciplinary team. Candidates apply to the specific tracks for which they are qualified: Latino Family Health: (Bilingual fluency in Spanish and English required) Interns provide behavioral health services to child, adolescent, adult, and older adult clients in outpatient mental health and community settings. Training emphasizes strengths-based, family-oriented interventions that address effects of trauma, immigration, acculturation and socioeconomic disparities. Practice opportunities include school-based interventions, in-home services to seniors, work with juvenile probationers, and psycho-education outreach via live broadcast, online, and printed media. STAR Mental Health Court: Interns provide services to adult mental health clients who are in the criminal justice system and Mental Health Court. Interns work with law enforcement, medical and mental health providers in the clinic, jail, and in the community, gaining supervised experience in assessment, trauma-informed treatment, and assertive case management. PAU SMI Track: This track is affiliated with the Diversity and Community Mental Health program, Pacific Graduate School of Professional Psychology at Palo Alto University, and open only to students currently enrolled in the PhD/DCMH program at PAU. Interns receive supervised training in providing integrated psychology services to adults and older adults with serious/persistent mental illness.
