Program Description

ABBFC Position Description: The ABBFC, a private practice Consortium composed of Child NeuroBehavioral Center for Health & Wellness, PC & Brighter Brains Integrative Health, LLC, is offering 2 positions for 1-2 year Postdoctoral Fellowship with clinical neuropsychology & therapy experience designed to train individuals to work with a variety of psychological & neurological clients. The 1 year fellow will spend 6 months at CNC & 6 months at BBIH. The 2 year fellow will spend the 1st year at CNC or BBIH and the 2nd year at the other site. If chosen, the 2 year position parallels neuropsychology requirements according to Houston Guidelines. Both sites share training & didactics monthly.

Patients are referred by doctors & neurologists. Opportunity exists to work with children, adolescents, adults, psychiatric populations, elderly, parents, families, & adopted families. Experiences would include psychological & neuropsychological testing, neurodevelopmental evals, trauma evals, evidence-based therapies, play therapy, individual/group/family therapy, RAD work/Intensives, neurofeedback training, & vision, auditory & literacy cognitive rehabilitation therapy. At least 2-4 hours per week of individual / group supervision is provided. Additional information posted at www.CNCkid.com.

In the 1st year, Fellows will review psychological testing & learn/build on the basics of neuropsychological assessment. Emphasis is placed on accurate administration / scoring of tests & how to customize test batteries to patient populations. If needed, training includes review of neuroanatomy & its application to testing. Simultaneously, the Fellow learns the basics of neurofeedback with review of the 10-20 EEG electrode placement & history/systems of Othmer INFRALOW neurofeedback. Fellow begins co-therapy of cases with child/adolescent, adult, & families. Fellows required to show proficiency in testing skills (live supervision), attend weekly postdoctoral / neurofeedback supervision, & attend informational webinars/conferences to enhance newly learned skills. Fellows expected to write concise case histories, behavioral observations, session notes, & interpret tests.

In the 2nd year, Fellows continue to expand knowledge in neuroanatomy, neuropsychological testing & neurofeedback. Neurofeedback is applied to trauma treatment through the application of alpha-theta neurofeedback. Fellow focuses on advanced interpretation of neuropsychological testing such as extensive executive assessment & determining neuropsychological patterns of children with Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyspraxia, Nonverbal Learning Disability & Semantic Pragmatic Disorders. Fellow will learn programs to remediate neuropsychological weaknesses. Fellow begins to learn the application of therapeutic techniques with more difficult populations such as RAD/Bipolar disorders. Fellow expected to write reports with advanced neuropsychological interpretation & devise/implement therapy plans for difficult populations. Fellow also instructs bachelor/master’s level students.

Objectives & Goals of the Program: Objectives of the program include systematic training in psychology, neuropsychology, & neurofeedback. Fellow will meet licensure for GA & SC (application, EPPP, state license & oral exam) as well as their desired state & being certification eligible for neurofeedback. Two-year Fellows required to sit for the GA or SC exam. Fellow will learn about private practice operations & billing. Fellow will be supported in beginning the process of application for insurance boards. Activities provided for the postdoctoral fellow: Fellows will test 2-3 cases per week & participate in approximately 10 neurofeedback, 3-4 therapy, & 3-4 cognitive rehabilitation ca per week.

Practice Description: Both CNC & Brighter Brains are private practices offering coordinated & comprehensive neurodevelopmental / neuropsychological assessments & therapy services for children, adolescents, adults. Neurofeedback is an adjunct to therapy. Othmer Method Neurofeedback is based off the 10-20 EEG system & is symptom driven. The parent/individual completes a detailed symptom checklist which allows clinicians to determine where the best placement for treatment should occur. This type of training provides information to the brain (holds a mirror to the brain so to speak) to allow the brain to begin the self-regulating, healing process. This process is likened to a cut finger. When you cut your finger, you do not address your finger and tell it to heal. The body instinctively sets up the conditions for healing. In the same way, this second form of neurofeedback sets the conditions for healing in motion in the brain. The brain receives information via tactile, visual, and auditory feedback and subtle changes are encouraged in the brain which impacts behavior.

The Client information along with data from each session is compiled and reviewed frequently and the sites are changed if needed.  Every 10-20 sessions, goals for treatment are discussed with the client/parent. We are having success treating migraine, headaches, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, tantrums, and autistic behaviors with this type of neurofeedback. Many patients have also been able to reduce medications after neurofeedback treatment.
