Program Description

Alicia's Place is a non-profit private practice serving children, families, and adults in the Hampton Roads area. We specialize in treating individuals who have experienced trauma, using best practice standards and evidence-based treatment models. Specifically, we have a large focus on training in and utilization of Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), two of the gold-standard treatment models for children who have experienced trauma. Alicia's Place also serves a lot of military members and their families, and we also have relationships with social services for therapy and testing clients (e.g., children in foster care, at-risk families, and court-ordered assessments). Our clients range in age from 2 to 65. Besides trauma, we treat many clients who present with depression, anxiety, relational problems, ADHD, high-functioning ASD, behavioral problems, bipolar disorder, attachment issues, and significant life stressors. Our assessment referrals include questions of diagnostic clarity and treatment recommendations, ADHD, ASD, learning disabilities, dyslexia, and personality and emotional functioning.

Interns will carry a therapy caseload of 10 clients per week and perform at least two assessments per month. They will also participate in two hours of weekly didactic trainings, two hours of group supervision, and two hours of individual supervision per week (one for therapy, one for assessment). There will be opportunity for supervising practicum-level students to gain experience with supervision.

Our agency culture is humanistic and person-centered. We have a strong sense of camaraderie and peer support, as well as valuing the importance of humor and being "real people." We also highly value communication, receptivity, and ability to take initiative. Our supervisors utilize a strengths-based, scaffolding model of trainee development. We strive to help our trainees develop and hone their clinical skills, clinical identities, and confidence in themselves as clinicians.
