Program Description

The Halifax Clinical Psychology Residency Program is a CPA-accredited program that provides training in a variety of settings, including outpatient, inpatient, forensic, rehabilitation, and community clinics. We offer six positions across three adult tracks:

  • Mental Health & Addictions – 4 positions
  • Health Psychology – 1 position
  • Neuropsychology – 1 position

Our residency program emphasizes client care, consultation, and interdisciplinary teamwork within a scientist-practitioner model.

Program Overview

The residency program is offered over 12 consecutive months. The fundamental goal of our program is to transition residents towards independent practice as a professional psychologist. It is our belief that this goal is best accomplished by meeting the objectives of providing residents with extensive, supervised experience with a variety of patient populations and presenting problems, embracing all forms of diversity.

We focus on helping residents gain knowledge and skills in areas central to practice, as outlined in the Mutual Recognition Agreement, which idenifies six core competencies (i.e., assessment and evaluation, intervention and consultation, research, ethics and standards, interpersonal relationships, and supervision).

Residents are expected to become active members of interdisciplinary teams and develop their consultation skills. They are exposed to a wide variety of presenting problems and professional roles, and training experiences are structured to provide maximum exposure to a broad range of therapeutic and assessment issues. Clinical case conferences, small group seminars, and intensive supervision are structured to foster the development of effective clinical skills, a professional identity and individual style, and an appreciation of the complex ethical, legal, and social issues faced by psychologists.

Location

Our program is part of Nova Scotia Health (NSH), a central health authority providing services and programs throughout the province. Training takes place in the NSH Central Zone, across multiple sites located in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM; Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, and Sackville). As the largest municipality in Atlantic Canada, the HRM is a diverse region with theatres, galleries, museums, a vibrant live music scene, fine dining, and a wide range of recreational activities.

Salary and Benefits

Our current salary is $45,825. This amount aligns with the most recent "livable wage" rates published for Halifax, NS (Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, 2022).

Benefits include:
- 3 weeks paid vacation
- 1 week paid education leave
- $300 education allowance
- Medical and dental coverage
- Access to primary care and mental health services during the year
- 13 paid statutory holidays
