Program Description

The ACHS internship with the Division of Community Health Chicago is partially affiliated with Adler University and includes assignment to conduct community embedded services with one or two agencies in Chicago. The program offers 8 full-time positions. In Phase I we only accept Adler University students. In Phase II we accept students from other programs.

The primary objective of the program is to prepare interns for entry into the field of professional psychology as socially responsible practitioners. The ACHS Internship program provides a well-rounded diverse training experience with clinical training  at one or more of the following: residential rehabilitation facilities for formerly incarcerated adults;  a community medical center; a child and adolescent residential program; and a community mental health program serving persons with severe and persistent mental illness. Training consists  of psychological testing, individual and group therapy, milieu therapy at many sites, with opportunity to do some couples and family therapy. All locations have an interdisciplinary team context. Interns will also provide routine consultations on their clinical cases and psychoeducational programs. Interns will be exposed to individually and culturally diverse populations in an urban setting. Training in various types of psychological assessments include neuropsychological screenings, cognitive, and socio-emotional assessments. Each intern will carry a caseload of 12-14 individual therapy clients and is expected to complete a minimum of 3 assessment batteries over the course of the training year. All interns are assigned two licensed supervisors who they see weekly. The program offers interns a range of supervisors with varying backgrounds and orientations including Adlerian, Cognitive Behavioral, Psychodynamic,  and Humanistic. In addition to providing services to clients, interns are involved in weekly meetings including Theoretical Orientations Seminar, a (bi-weekly) Director's Meeting, a (bi-weekly) Professional Identities group, a  Clinical Supervision Seminar, and an Intern Seminar covering a variety of topics. Interns are taught to develop supervisory/management skills by managing and training externs (i.e., practicum students). Interns are allowed to augment their training through coursework (up to 3 courses) at Adler University (at no cost).
