Brief description of the typical work day for an intern at this training site Daily schedules for interns can vary due to a diversity of professional experiences. Interns engage in a number of professional activities including individual personal, career or educational counseling, formal assessments, intake, crisis work, group work, outreach, biofeedback, and supervision of practicum counselors. Weekly training activities include individual supervision, group supervision, supervision of supervision, and an intern training seminar. In addition, administrative or preparation time would occur each day.

Interview process description:

Applicants are notified about their interview status by phone and/or e-mail.  We offer individual virtual interviews that are one and a half hours in length.  Our interviews are scheduled in December and early January during the University's winter break.  We work closely with applicants to find a date and time that fits their particular schedule.  Thus, we do not have a tentative interview date to list.

Interviewees meet with the Training Director for a half hour informational interview, with 2-3 senior staff members for a half hour formal portion of the interview, and with 2-3 interns for a half hour. Interviewees are encouraged to ask questions throughout the interview, especially of the interns.  Requests to speak with specific staff members are welcome.

Program Description

The Counseling and Testing Center (CTC) is a full-service university counseling center that provides a wide variety of services to a diverse student body, making it an ideal setting for the practical training of psychologists. Moreover, because our training experiences are varied, the program prepares interns for employment in a variety of settings. Interns spend about 20 hours each week in direct service, which includes individual counseling, process and psycho-educational groups, intakes, assessment, biofeedback, and psycho-educational workshops/outreach.  We provide both short term and longer-term therapy.  Interns receive 6-8 hours of supervision and training each week.  In addition, they provide supervision for practicum counselors.  Assessment activities include LD/ADHD assessments, testing related to diagnosis, and integrated report writing. Opportunity also exists for interns to choose an area of focus.  Past areas of focus have included cultural diversity, gender issues, administration, training, group work and learning disability evaluation. Interns participate in a research group and may have the option of conducting research.  At times, interns have published or presented with CTC staff. 

The clients of the Counseling and Testing Center are representative of the University of Akron student body and present with a wide variety of concerns, ranging from developmental issues to more severe psychopathology.  Recent client demographic data found that 37% of our clients identified as racial/ethnic minorities and another 5% were international students.  Over 40% identified as LGBQIA+ and 8% identified as transgender or self-identified gender. Over 27% were first generation college students.

The CTC is known for its interest in diversity and social justice.  Our stated mission is to “promote student learning, success and retention through excellence in comprehensive culturally competent psychological services.”  We have a small cohesive staff of seven full-time licensed psychologists.  We are highly invested in training and interns are integrated with our staff in a collegial manner.  All of our full-time staff members participate in training and are available to supervise.  Two of our full-time psychologists are African-American and one has an international background.  Interns can request to work with a specific staff member for supervision. Although we consider ourselves to be generalists who operate from an integrated and multicultural framework, we do have expertise in a variety of therapy approaches including ACT, CBT, DBT, emotion focused therapies, positive psychology and trauma work.  

We consider several factors in our intern search decisions and have never focused exclusively on clinical hours.  In addition, although experience in a university setting is appreciated it is not required.  We value intern candidates who have a breadth of experiences, an interest in diversity, and a commitment to meeting the needs of a diverse college student population. The information on this page is an estimation of the amount of time you may spend with different activities and populations.  

We are a University Counseling Center that provides generalist training.  We work with a diverse student body that present with a wide variety of concerns.  Presenting issues vary from developmental concerns to more serious mental illnesses and trauma experiences.  We also work with clients on career and academic concerns.  We do not have session limits and refer very few students out of our center.  Interns complete 18-22 direct service hours (individual therapy, group counseling, intakes, assessment, outreach workshops, biofeedback) weekly.  Each semester, we ask that interns complete at least 2 LD/ADHD assessments as well as co-leading at least one process group and one psycho-educational group. Interns spend four hours a week completing intakes. Crisis clients are seen during intake or as part of an intern's regular caseload. Interns supervise practicum counselors. They also conduct outreach activities, including  psycho-educational workshops and information tables.  Interns are involved in a research group and have published or presented with staff psychologists. Our Center has good support and connection with other university offices as well as other health providers providing opportunities for consultation.

In addition to individual supervision and group supervisions, interns receive two hours of specific intern training each week.  Training seminars topicis include didatic training on all of the above areas designated as major areas of study and areas of experience as well as many of the areas of exposure. Our training is grounded in evidence based practices and we provide trainings on specific empirically supported treatments such as ACT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, Emotion Focused Therapy and trauma therapies.  We also provide specific training and on-going group supervision with Learning Disorder and ADHD assessments.
