Brief description of the typical work day for an intern at this training site Each resident is selected for a specific specialty track training rotation where they will engage in training and practice within a focused pediatric and/or child clinical psychology area for approximately 28-30 hours per week. Residents are also then provided the opportunity to select from elective training rotations (19 rotations with focuses in assessment, intervention, consultation, and/or prevention). On average, residents can select 8-10 hours per week of elective rotations that support building of profession-wide and program-specific competencies. Residents participate in a weekly academic half day which includes seminars, case conferences, developmental peer supervision community of practice, journal clubs, and training director/professional development meetings. Within a typical day based on the resident's rotation selections and interests, the resident could be expected to deliver clinical services, complete relevant documentation, provide developmental supervision to a practicum student, collaborate in clinical supervision, and/or attend a didactic.

Interview process description:

Our virtual (Zoom) interviews take place across three Open House dates in mid January.  Our schedule is such that it is a whole day, and we try to make it a really fun and relaxed day. The Open House will be a blend of virtual and asynchronous activities. Applicants selected for the open house will be provided with a video overview and tour of the program prior their interview date. The interview day activities will take place virtually via Zoom. The day starts with a program review and Q&A by the Training Director, followed by meet and greets with rotation supervisors. After a brief lunch break, applicants will be provided the opportunity to meet current residents. Applicants will be able to join different break out rooms to discuss their interests and questions with current residents. Following this meeting, applicants will complete 3 interviews with rotation supervisors. At the end of the day, the Training Director will host a meeting with applicants to answer any remaining questions and explain next steps. Interview dates are:

Program Description

 

The Internship Program at the Mailman Center for Child Development, Department of Pediatrics, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine offers training opportunities with an emphasis in clinical child psychology and pediatric psychology. The program is designed to offer experiences with the child (and his/her family) with, or at risk for, developmental disabilities or behavioral problems due to genetic, environmental, or medical factors. There are opportunities for training in the psychological aspects of traditional developmental disabilities (e.g., genetic disorders, autism, and learning disabilities), pediatric psychology, and prevention in at-risk populations. Residents will develop profession-wide competencies in health service psychology, as well as specific skills within the domains of child clinical and pediatric psychology.  Our program emphasizes an interdisciplinary developmental approach to care and cultural competence throughout training experiences.  Residents will gain experience in clinical/developmental assessment, intervention, prevention, and consultation while working alongside professionals from other disciplines. Residents will also acquire skills to work with individuals from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds. Matching to a position involves a 28-hour/week commitment to one specialty track across the 12-month internship year. The remaining time will be spent on elective rotations (8-10 hours) selected to meet the training needs of the resident and defined competencies of the program. The specific 12-month rotation commitment is determined at the time of the match. In addition, an academic half day (3 hours) is provided weekly.
